Shadowgun, the latest Vita port that’s the talk of town right now

There’s a new impressive port that’s been making the rounds lately on the PS Vita scene: Shadowgun. The game’s been a bit elusive because it came from the Chinese side of the scene, so, there’s language barrier at work. Also, the released vpk contains a punch of copyrighted content, so you won’t find download links on typical homebrew news sites (including wololo.net).

With that being said, we tried the port (which has been out for a bit more than month now), and it’s impressive on many aspects.

What is Shadowgun for PS Vita?

In Shadowgun, players use virtual touchscreen controls to control the protagonist, John Slade. The controls feature an analog stick on the left used for movement, and context sensitive action buttons on the right, used for firing or interacting with the environment. A major component of Shadowguns gameplay is its cover system, which allows players to use cover when necessary, with Slade hiding behind walls and barriers to avoid enemy fire, and opening fire himself at opportune moments. The game also supports gamepads, which this Vita port makes full use of.

Shadowgun was a popular action series on Mobile (iOS and Android) in the early 2010’s, back when gaming companies where actually trying to leverage the new power of mobile phones for actual games, and not disguised casino schemes.

Ha, bitterness aside, it’s one of those great Mobile shooters, in line with Mass Effect Infiltrator or Dead space Mobile.

What’s even more interesting, is that this port was initially deemed difficult by Rinnegatamante:(see Rinne’s statement below)

But it appears developer Moqi01 has achieved the impossible here, and managed a successful port to the PS Vita.

Update: rinnegatamante has reached out to give the precision that he was not referring to the difficulty of the port here. specifically:

As far as the port is concerned, it plays smoothly, with the occasional glitch once in a while. Most notably the screen with go black occasionally when an explosion needs to be displayed, but so far this hasn’t been game breaking for us. This is a nice addition to the Vita Library, although if I can be perfectly honest, I’ve preferred the Mass Effect Infiltrator port, simply for the connection it has to an already known AAA franchise.
