Release: SoulCalibur Vita port by Rinnegatamante

Vita developer Rinnegatamante is at it again with yet another cool port for the PS Vita: SoulCalibur.

This is once again a port based on the Android version of the game, leveraging a wrapper initially created by TheFloW, and recently augmented by the FalsoNDK and FalsoJNI libraries by Gl33ntwine (libs specifically dedicated to porting Android software to the PS Vita). What’s important to understand for the end user here is that those ports do not use emulation, but rather are wrappers against the native Android binary. Bottom line, they run much smoother than if they were emulated. Multiple AAA games have been ported with this mechanism, you can check some of them here.

What is SoulCalibur for PS Vita?

SoulCalibur is a popular weapon-based fighting game franchise developed by Bandai Namco Studios. The series was popular in arcade, got multiple console ports, and eventually the second* game of the franchise got an Android port in 2013. The Vita port is based on this Android release, and brings a few modifications, either to accommodate performance, or some QoL features.

* The second game in the Soulcalibur franchise is Soulcalibur. The First Game was named Soul Edge 

From the developer:

  • The port has been tested with v.1.0.15 of the game.
  • Some stages (eg. Water Labyrinth and the final Arcade fight with Inferno) might cause framedrops. Please report any of these problematics so that a fix can be find for specific stages.
  • When first launching the game, it is recommended to go into Options and lower BGM and SE volumes to 8 or lower. Not doing so will cause SFX glitching out due to too high volume playback.
  • Some stages (Takamatsu Castle and Money Pit) got simplified in background elements to reduce framerate tanking.
  • Stages that aren’t unlockable in Android version due to lack of Mission Battle mode got restored and will be available to play from the beginning, including alternate stages.

There are several steps for initial installation process so please follow the guide below

Installation:

From the readme

  • In order to properly install the game, you’ll have to follow these steps precisely:

    • Install kubridge and FdFix by copying kubridge.skprx and fd_fix.skprx to your taiHEN plugins folder (usually ux0:tai) and adding two entries to your config.txt under *KERNEL:
      *KERNEL
      ux0:tai/kubridge.skprx
      ux0:tai/fd_fix.skprx
    

    Note Don’t install fd_fix.skprx if you’re using rePatch plugin

    • Optional: Install PSVshell to overclock your device to 500Mhz.
    • Install libshacccg.suprx, if you don’t have it already, by following this guide.
    • Obtain your copy of SoulCalibur legally for Android in form of an .apk file and an obb. You can get all the required files directly from your phone or by using an apk extractor you can find in the play store.
    • Open the apk with your zip explorer and extract the folder lib folder to ux0:data/soulcalibur.
    • Install WinImage and open the obb file with it.
    • Select all the files and right-click them, then click on Extract and extract all the files in ux0:data/soulcalibur.
    • Download xdelta UI and extract the zip content in ux0:data/soulcalibur.
    • Download the shader.xdelta patch from Release page and apply it, using xdelta UI to ux0:data/soulcalibur/shader.dat and replace original file with the patched one.
    • Optional: For trophies to be unlockable, install NoTrpDrm.
