Developer Gl33ntwine has released a port of Sonic 3 A.I.R for the PS Vita, with additional credits to Rinnegatamante and MDashK. This particular port was apparently a tough nut to crack, 3 years in the making, with multiple issues and memory leaks fixed along the way.

If you’d like to see more ports, know that multiple AAA games have been ported in recent months to the PS Vita, in particular from Android. We’ve seen Android ports to the PS Vita for multiple games now, including Tomb Raider 1 & 2,  Dead SpaceMass Effect,  Fahrenheit,  Crazy Taxi, Rockstar’s Bully,  GTA San Andreas, as well as Final Fantasy ports and more. You can check some of them here.

What is Sonic 3 A.I.R. for PS Vita?

Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited (sonic3air.org) describes itself simply as a “fan-made widescreen remaster of Sonic 3 & Knuckles”. The game requires assets from the official Steam version, in order to run. Sonic 3 A.I.R. brings some QoL improvements compared to the Steam version of the game, and has been ported to a variety of homebrew consoles (including, now, the PS Vita). Last but not least, it supports mods and patches (“tweaks”).

From the port’s Developer:

Sonic 3 A.I.R. (Angel Island Revisited) is a fan-made remaster of the classic Sega game Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This project modernizes the original game by adding widescreen support, improved graphics and audio, and new gameplay features. It is designed to offer a superior playing experience on modern systems while requiring original game data to run.

This repository contains the PlayStation Vita port of Sonic 3 A.I.R. Consider this a “beta” release aimed at collecting player feedback. In the future, the port is planned to be merged upstream.

Download and Install Sonic 3 A.I.R. for PS Vita

We generally recommend that you Download and install VitaDB Downloader to then easily install any homebrew. But in this case, the install process requires some manual steps, so you’re better off downloading it from vitaDB, or the project’s github.

Setup (from the readme)

In order to properly install the game, you’ll have to follow these steps precisely:

  • Legally obtain a compatible Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM.
The instructions on how to do that are available at sonic3air.org

  • Install FdFix by copying fd_fix.skprx to your taiHEN plugins folder (usually ur0:tai) and adding the entry to your config.txt under *KERNEL:

  *KERNEL
  ur0:tai/fd_fix.skprx
! ⚠ Don't install `fd_fix.skprx` if you're using the rePatch plugin!
! ⚠ rePatch provides the same functionality and they may conflict.
  • Make sure you have libshacccg.suprx in the ur0:/data/ folder on your console. If you don’t, use ShaRKBR33D to get it quickly and easily.

  • Download the archive with data files (sonic3air.zip) from Releases. Unpack it to the ux0:/data/sonic3air/ folder on your console. Example of correct resulting path: ux0:/data/sonic3air/data/scripts.bin.

  • Rename your Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM to Sonic_Knuckles_wSonic3.bin and place it in ux0:data/sonic3air/Sonic_Knuckles_wSonic3.bin.

  • Download and install the VPK from Releases.

  • (Optional) Download the remastered audio pack (audioremaster.bin) from Releases. Place it in the ux0:data/sonic3air/data/ folder.
