Update from wololo: Somehow I managed to completely miss the fact that The Z had published an article about this release a couple hours ago (you can find the Z’s article here). Yay, you get 2 articles on the same topic for the price of 1. Apologies about the mixup here, totally my fault!

Smealum delivers once again, and just released TubeHax.

What is TubeHax?

TubeHax and IronHax are two ways to get homebrews to run on your 3DS, and they run up to the latest firmware 9.9. They allow, among other things, to run emulators and enable region-free compatibility on your 3DS. TubeHax requires you to install the Youtube app, while Ironhax requires the game Ironfall. Both applications are free on the eShop, but Nintendo removed the Ironfall game after Smealum’s announce a few days ago, that the game had a vulnerability that could be leveraged to run homebrew.

He announced a couple days ago that another vulnerability exists in the youtube App, which you can get from the eShop, directly on your 3DS. At the time of this writing, the app is still available on the eShop, but it is likely that Nintendo will take action to either remove the app shortly, or patch it with a “security” Firmware update. so you better get youtube fast.

How to install and use TubeHax?

Smealum has a very detailed explanation page on how to install and run the homebrew launcher through TubeHax.

In order to install tubehax, you will need a console whose firmware version is between 9.0 and 9.9, as well as the YouTube application (available for free on eShop) and an internet connection.

Preparing your SD card

In order for homebrew to run on your system, you will need to place a few files on your SD card :

  • boot.3dsx : this file should be placed at the root of your SD card. It’s what ninjhax/ironhax/tubehax will run first ! Usually, this is the Homebrew Launcher.
  • 3ds/ : this folder will contain all the homebrew applications you want to install to your system. You can either place 3DSX files directly inside of that folder, or create an individual folder for each application you install.

To make things easier, we put together the homebrew starter kit; you can just download it and extract it at the root of your SD card. Alternatively, you may choose to only download The Homebrew Launcher menu executable and place it at the root of your SD card.
No matter what, you should have a file named boot.3dsx placed at the root of your SD card.

Installing TubeHax

  1. On your 3DS, open the System Settings app, then go to Internet Settings and Connection Settings. From there, select your favorite Connection, tap the Change Settings button, and on the second page head over to the DNS section. Once there, select “No” for “Auto-obtain DNS”, and under Detailed Setup, enter the following address : 107.211.140.065.
  2. Save these new settings and close the System Settings app.
  3. Open the YouTube app. It should redirect you to a firmware selection page.
  4. Under “Select your firmware version”, choose your console’s firmware version. Getting this right is very important ! Once you’re sure you did it right, hit the Submit button.
  5. Wait for a few seconds. If you did all the previous steps right, the exploit should run and the Homebrew Launcher should load up !

Note: if you did get your firmware version wrong (which happens to more people than you might think), we’re still waiting for an answer from Smealum as to how to fix it, frenetically click on the “change firmware version” button that should appear on the page in youtube. You need to click on the button as soon as you can, consider clicking it repeatedly even before the page load. Otherwise at some point the page is frozen and you’ll have to try again.
