Developer CTurt has been front left and center of PS4 hacking news lately, as he makes progress on his work around the 1.76 Webkit exploit.
The Webkit exploit has been around for a while, and if our experience with the Vita is to be used as a precedent, there’s a risk it will not be very useful to end users, at least not directly. However, it seems to have open the door to a few nice things for hackers who wish to understand the system further (see psxdev’s recent update on the PS4 Camera. And yeah, we had talked about PS4Eye in the past). And that part, people, always mean cool things down the road (even if we’re talking a very distant future).
Not so long ago, CTurt mentioned he was working on an open SDK for the PS4, and he announced he has code execution on PS4 through the webkit exploit on firmware 1.76.
This week, he released a video showing him controlling a tiny pong homebrew running on his PS4. The controller is a Nintendo DS, he says, because “we can’t use the official controller library”. Similarly, the homebrew is rendered in an html5 canvas because hackers don’t control the PS4 rendering routines yet.
It’s a tiny step of course, but exciting nonetheless.

You can download PS4 Playground here, although the latest version doesn’t seem to include the Pong game yet.
