The end of GekiHEN – A look at all the entries/Voting Open

The GekiHEN contest ended on the 19th of March and voting has opened on Wololo and PlayStationHaX. This means that GekiHEN will no longer accept new entries so what’s there is what you may vote on. According to the GekiHEN website, there are 4 prize categories and Custom Protocol is also offering a prize for the best French project. This article will be divided into the 4 categories and every piece of homebrew will get a small description.

Section I: Best [homebrew] game

This prize category is there for original homebrew games NOT ports. There’s another section for ports. The entries (oldest first) are as follows:

Bernard Chronicles – By ‘Flappy Jesus’, it’s a TetrisAttack/Pokemon Puzzle game with an AI you must beat. This homebrew which is a vita exclusive game, sadly, didn’t get past 0.01.
Pong – By ‘NamelessGhoul0’, it’s Pong ;p Doesn’t need a long description, eh?
Starkiller 2D – By ‘Freakler’, a developer who’s actively contributing to the scene. This homebrew is a 2D puzzle game that’s quite unique. It has 54 levels and is quite a creative piece of software.
Happy Land – By ‘MyLegGuy’, quite a wacky homebrew with a funky name ;p
ZSokoban – By ‘gdljjrod’, a variant of the game Japanese game ‘Sokoban’ which is a puzzle game in which you have to move blocks around a room to finish a level. This version has limited retries so it’s much more challenging Ya lose 3 times, you gotta start again from the beginning ;O
Starfield Vita – By ‘gnmmarechal’, a simple endless game in which you must dodge the stars.
Project Void – By ‘Akabane87’, the first 3D Vita game devloped with Sony’s SDK. Latest version, 0.0.3 brought about some more stuff you can play around with it but it’s still not fully finished.
Galactic Federation – By ‘The Suicidal Robot’, a top-down Action Sci-Fi RPG in which you must kill all enemies in a dungeon. According to its GekiHEN page, it’s unfinished and you may only play 1 level.

Section II: Best utility/hack

This category is for utilities and hacks. The entries (oldest first) are as follows:

LuaIRC – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, an infamous Vita developer. As the name suggests, it’s an IRC client but it has many extra features and a decent UI.
Vita Calculator – By ‘Flappy Jesus’, it’s a calculator. Something that should have been bundled with the Vita in the first place (instead of Welcome Park…).
PSP2Shell – By ‘cpasjuste’. It’s a remote shell utility that’s aimed at simplifying the development process for a PSVita. You need a Windows or Linux host to use it.
Custom Themes Manger – By ‘Red Squirrel’, it allows you to download themes off a ‘psv.altervista.org’ and install them with a simple touch. It uses libvita2d in order to provide an elegant UI.
Game Shrinker – By ‘Dakor’, a utility that removes extra stuff, such as manuals, video files and extra languages, from a PSVita game installed on the memory stick.
RinCheat SE – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, a companion utility for RinCheat that allows you to apply several cheats to save data amongst other things.
OneLua Vita V2R0 – By ‘Team ONElua’, a Lua interpreter for the PSVita which allows you to create your own applications.
System Check Enabled – By ‘Draqen’, it checks if your PSVita is activated by checking for act.dat it seems.
ONEtranslate – By ‘ONElua Team’, it is an application that makes use of the infamous Google Translate service to translate words and phrases. 11 languages are supported, which are English, Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean and Chinese. There’s also automatic mode to detect the language you’re typing.
Theme Manager Ex – By ‘kylon’, an advanced theme manager that brings along a new theme format.
ARK Fast for 3.60 – By ‘ONElua Team’, it’s a utility that lets you install ARK on your PSVita system. It also uses ‘CelesteBlue’ ‘s method for installing a PSP game if none are found.
BookrMod Vita – By ‘pathway27’. Quoting the entry page, it’s a very early version that’s a proof of concept. It can only open TXT files.
VitaForecast – By ‘Joel16’, a weather application, a la iOS weather app, that lets you check out the weather. It uses openweathermap.org to display various bits of weather information about a user-specified location.
AppDB Tool – By ‘luckys’, a utility that allows you to update your database (app.db) or reset it without losing your icons/folder layout.
ePSP Bubble Installer – An infamous utility by ‘CelesteBlue’ that lets you install an ePSP bubble to be used for Adrenaline/ARK even if your PSVita ISN’T ACTIVATED (it takes care of activating your Vita itself).
Notepad++ (VE) – By ‘Arkanite’, a take on the popular Windows advanced text editor Notepad++. It has an easy to use UI and many features.
Vita Homebrew Browser – By ‘Devoname120’, as the name suggests it is a piece of software like an App Store. You can find homebrew, read their description, view screenshots and download/install them directly on your Vita. The source used is Rinnegatamante’s VitaDB.
There’s nothing in the ‘hacks’ section on the GekiHEN page.

Section III: Best emulator/port

This section is dedicated to the best emulator or port. The entries (oldest first/emulator section first) are as follows:

pfba – By ‘cpasjuste’, an arcade emulator based on Portable Final Burn Alpha with an elegant user interface.
uae4all – By ‘cpasjuste’, an Amiga 500/1200 emulator for the PSVita that works quite well and received a LOT of updates.
vOpenTyrian – By ‘cpasjuste’, an OpenTyrian port for the PSVita.
Prince of Persia – By ‘cpasjute’, an open-source port of Prince of Persia for the PSVita.
Another World Vita – By ‘Enrique Somolinos Pérez’, a port of the classic game Another World.
HOTA – By ‘usineur’, a port of the reverse engine for Heart of the Alien, which is the sequel of Another World.
Minicraft – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, a port of Minicraft by Notch which is a 2D top-down sandbox game.
Bermuda-Vita – By ‘usineur’, a port of ‘Bermuda Syndrome’ for the PSVita.
ZeldaROTH – By ‘usineur’, a port of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Return of Hylian’ which is a fan-made game.
GNU Robbo – By ‘bomblik’, a port of the free open source GNU Robbo game.
BlockOut II – By ‘bomblik’, a port of the BlockOut II that’s written in OpenGL.
OpenSyobon Vita – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, a port of Syobon Action which is a frustrating platform game inspired by Super Mario Bros.

Section IV: Best plugin

This is the most sparse category by far with only 2 entries from the same competitor. The entries are as follows:

RinCheat – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, a multi purpose plugin that lets you use cheats, take screenshots whenever and wherever you want, stream your PSVita’s screen to a PC amongst other things
TrackPlug – By ‘Rinnegatamante’, a plugin that shows how much time you spent playing a specific game.

Conclusion

Voting on Wololo is open so you may vote by going to the /talk forums and selecting the category you wish to vote in. Don’t vote with multiple accounts as it’s unfair on the participants of the contest! The links to the voting threads on Wololo are below. Voting on Wololo will be over on 8 April.
