VitaDoom updated to support SoundFX and analogue sticks thanks to aagallag

DOOM is probably one of the best games out there and I personally think it stood the test of time as almost every device ends up having a port of it. The PSVita port was relatively lacking but thanks to “aagallag”, we’re got a more desirable experience for our beloved console.

What’s VitaDoom?

VitaDOOM is one of the oldest pieces of homebrew available for the PSVita in the HENkaku days as it’s even in the showcase section of henkaku.xyz! VitaDOOM is even available for Rejuvinate so the port for HENkaku is actually a port of a port as the base of VitaDOOM is DoomPSP-0.04 S.S. b5. It is important to note that this port only supports the original DOOM WADs which means DOOM, DOOM II, Ultimate DOOM, Plutonia and TNT expansions. Framerate for me is about 34 (it has a built-in FPS counter) and there aren’t any fancy features such as running/aiming (I know that aiming is not a part of the original DOOM experience).

DOOM was originally ported to the Vita by MrNetrix/Netrix in July 2015 but now, developer “aagallag” decided to add some features to make the game better.

What’s been updated/changed?

The following has been added to the PSVita port of DOOM:

  • SoundFX got enabled which means that you get sound effects but still no music (which is a shame as the music is probably one of the best parts in the DOOM games).
  • Weapon switching got fixed as the right analogue stick is now enabled for that purpose. The right analogue stick is only enabled when you’re using the d-pad for control. Changing weapons when you’re using the left analogue stick for player control is via the d-pad.
  • There is now a toggle for d-pad or analogue control on the start screen of the homebrew.

Options screen you get when you start VitaDOOM

  • Update 1.1: Bug fix when you change to the chainsaw since the chainsaw triggered the map before.

The update is pretty substantial as analogue stick control, fixed weapon switching and sound effects are pretty important things if you want a decent DOOM experience.

Conclusion

In order to get the game, just get the VPK from the link below and install it. After installing it, place your original WAD files (DOOM data files) in ux0:/data/doom/WADs. This game is a safe homebrew so it doesn’t have permission to access any other directories than ux0:/data and the folders inside. Now, I hope that someone will either improve upon this port or try porting Zandronum because Brutal DOOM on the PSVita would be awesome! (or any other DOOM mods for that matter).

If you have any issues report them to “aagallag” on GitHub.
