Thanks to a small number of dedicated developers, such as Rinnegatamante and usineur, the PSVita keeps on getting ports of open-source SDL games. This time around, KETM and AbbayeDesMorts got ported to the Vita, perhaps to give you something interesting to play before the year is out!

What is KETM (Kill Everything That Moves)?

If you’re a fan of Tyrian or similar games, this one is certainly something that you should check out!

Playing 1941 with the KETM engine on the PSVita. Performance is pretty good so you’ll have no gripes on that front!

This game engine has 4 modes and these are:

  • 1941 – A mode that imitates the 1941 game found in the arcades and TurboGrafix16. You may be more familiar with 1942, a slightly different version that was available on many platforms such as the NES, GBC, Commodore 64 and more.
  • Star Wars
  • Iron Man
  • Mario Kart – Quite an odd mode/skin for a vertical shooter if you ask me.
  • KETM episode 1.

This game engine (KETM is actually a game engine since it works with many different modes) is available on various Linux distributions as it’s open-source and works via SDL.

What’s L’Abbaye Des Morts?

This game is a ZX Spectrum-esque platformer that was released back in 2010 for Windows PCs but it found its way on various other platforms such as Linux, MacOS, the PSP and even HTML5 so that you could play it in your browser!

L’Abbaye Des Morts is a game that follows a French cleric called Jean Raymond that was expelled from the Languedoc region in France since his Catholic denomination, the Cathars, were treated as heretics one day in the 13th century. While Jean finds refuge in an ancient church, it turns out that beneath it, he found buried an ancient evil and so he ends up venturing in there…

L’Abbaye Des Morts in action. If you’re a fan of old computer platformers, this is one to try on your Vita!

This game features both 8-bit (ZX Spectrum-esque) and 32-bit graphics so that you could choose between which mode you find the best.

Conclusion

To get both games, you can simply open VHBB and install them from there since they’re available on VitaDB. Unfortunately, VHBB decided not to work for me so I had to download them manually from VitaDB and install them by copying them to my Vita via FTP.

If you have any issues, report them in a civil manner to Rinnegatamante on the GitHub or /talk thread links below!
