PS4: GameBoy emulator GBEmu released for 4.55

Developer Retrogamer has released a port of a Gameboy emulator for PS4 4.xx (presumably 4.55 as everyone’s now focusing on this firmware rather than 4.05).

The release is more of a proof of concept at this point, with issues in audio as well as a lack of integration with the PS4 filesystem. The latter meaning that for now, all roms have to be included as “resources” in the pkg file at compile time. Retrogamer says he is working on fixing these two things.

The release also appears to have been built with Unity, most likely using a leaked official PS4 SDK. The scene for now does not have a “fully functional” open source PS4 SDK, which has been limiting Homebrew development and steering some developers in the direction of using the leaked official SDKs.

It is also unclear what the original emulator being ported was, as the developer didn’t point to the original source code.

Despite all of these issues, it’s great to see more homebrew showing up on the PS4. It’s worth noting that Retrogamer has been sharing tips and tutorials on how to use unity for PS4, for those who want to tread that path…

Due to the lack of filesystem integration, the developer has included a sample game in his release. Because of this, from a copyright perspective, I choose to not point you to the source of the information or any download links. Thanks for your understanding, as always!
