Recently, the PlayStation Classic has been on everybody’s minds when it comes to console hacking but the Nintendo Switch is still receiving its own fair share of homebrew updates. In this article, we’ll be speaking about recent releases which include a version of NX-Shell with a video player, Atmosphère 0.8.2 and ReiNX 2.0!

Unfortunately, Nintendo decided not to include a video player with the Switch so if you want to watch any video on it, you’d better hope it’s available on YouTube (or the few other services like Hulu/Nico Nico that have an app for the Switch). However, that problem is being fixed by work from the homebrew scene so that you could watch anything on your Switch.

First, we got PlayerNX (without audio) and now, a video player has been integrated into NX-Shell’s code by its developer, Joel16.

Currently, the video player is at the following state:

  • It can play MP4 files and, as per tests by GBATemp user “Shadow_The_Hedgehog82“, MKV files as well. In the future, all codecs supported by ffmpeg, like AVI, should work
  • Currently, it seems to be able to render 720p video just fine but Joel16 has warned against using higher resolutions for now
    • The aforementioned GBATemp user also demonstrated 1080p video working just fine on their Switch but obviously, anything higher than 720p will be downscaled to 720p as it’s the Switch’s native screen resolution
  • Player controls aren’t fully implemented yet and you can only exit (by pressing B) as pausing/fast-forwarding hasn’t been implemented yet
  • Unlike PlayerNX, audio is supported so you can watch stuff other than silent movies!

To try out NX-Shell’s video player, grab the latest nightly build from here. If you have any feedback, write on NX-Shell’s GBATemp thread or log issues in the Issues tab of GitHub.

Atmosphère 0.8.2 released and ReiNX updated for FW 6.2.0

Atmosphère is currently the most popular CFW for the Nintendo Switch and it was recently updated to support FW 6.2.0 with version 0.8.0. However, Atmosphère updates never seem to slow down and now, version 0.8.2 has been released to fix some bugs so that your experience could be better.

Overclocking on the Nintendo Switch is now a thing - N64, PS1 and DS emulation greatly improved!

Hacked Switches can do great stuff, like emulating N64/DS with some games being playable when overclocked, but be careful if you care about your device not getting banned!

Among the bugs fixed, we find:

  • Some bugs, that caused a “Key Derivation Failed!” message on boot-up, have been fixed. These have to do with fixing a race condition and some other stuff
  • If you’re still on FW 1.0.0, then you’ll be pleased to know this update fixes a bug that caused some modules to not work on that FW
  • Sleep mode with debug enabled now works

To get Atmosphère 0.8.2, check out this link.

On the other hand, ReiNX, which is a competing CFW for the Switch, has been updated with FW 6.2.0 support.

This can be seen by checking the commit history and noticing a commit reading “Full 6.2 support! and other refactoring” which also bumps the version number to 2.0. As of writing this article, ReiNX 2.0 isn’t available on the Release page of the project’s GitHub but you can still get a compiled binary that’s been shared from the ReiSwitched Discord group.

If you wish to run ReiNX on your FW 6.2.0-running Switch, simply follow this link to grab the binaries.

Conclusion

Recently, the Switch has been getting a fair share of interest from developers and its scene is pretty active as of now.

If you’re interested in more Switch stuff, you can check out the recent article about overclocking it for better emulator performance (no reports of Switches blowing up have surfaced so overclocking seems to be somewhat safe if done in moderation). On the other hand, you can read about developments on emulating it on a PC if you don’t think you’ll be buying one anytime soon!
