Apparently, the Christmas season got numerous folks working on PSVita homebrew and this time, we have quite a few recent releases. These releases include Bad Apple, a port of Meritous, Frying Master and a significant update to vitaSnake!

Bad Apple and Meritous ported to the PSVita

The PSVita has finally joined the group and now, it has a Bad Apple PV homebrew!

If you’re interested in seeing older consoles pushed to their limits, then you’ve probably seen a recurring piece of software used for this purpose.

This piece of software is the Bad Apple PV which is a video (with sound) of the Bad Apple song which is part of the Touhou project. Among available ports of this PV, we find one for the NES, SNES, Genesis, 3DS and numerous other consoles but the PSVita didn’t have a port despite it being publicly hacked for over 2 years. Now, thanks to Chromaryu, the PSVita got its own port of Bad Apple which runs smoothly and obviously has audio.

To grab the VPK for it, simply follow this link and install it via VitaShell.

On the other hand, Rinnegatamante has ported yet another open-source game to the PSVita and this one’s called Meritous.

Do you like dungeon crawling games? If so, Rinnegatamante ported another game that you’ll like!

This game, which was ported to the Vita from its Switch port, is a dungeon crawling game in which you explore dungeons while killing enemies and listening to a pretty nice soundtrack. This is done in order to find answers about a secret, which has to do with a place of unlimited power, that lies hidden in the planet where the game takes place.

If you wish to play it on your PSVita, you can get it from Vita Homebrew Browser (VHBB) as it’s available on VitaDB and you can check out its thread on Wololo /talk for more information!

vitaSnake updated and Frying Master released for the Vita

Snake is an all-time classic and obviously, the Vita has its own homebrew port by Grzybojad.

Ever thought of playing Snake with a touchscreen? Well, now you can but unfortunately, the snake can’t wrap around the screen 🙁

However, its developer thought that it needed a few more features and so released version 1.2 to add some more stuff to this simple yet enjoyable game. These features include:

  • Touchscreen support in both the game itself (for controlling the snake) and the menus
    • With this update, the snake follows your finger so you can play Snake a bit differently
    • Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to disable touch controls so the game might become unplayable if your PSVita’s touchscreen is a bit defective
  • Ability to change the apple’s look from the Options menu. Available looks include the Nokia pellet, a battery, a regular apple, a brighter apple and a Sonic-like ring
  • Some small tweaks such as an update to the “How To Play” text and some visual tweaks to the menus

Like Meritous, Snake is available on VHBB (VitaDB Link) so you can grab it from there or from the in-line link above.

The gyroscope on the Vita is usually a forgotten hardware component but with Frying Master, it can actually be used to fry some stuff!

vitaSnake aside, the PSVita also got another piece of homebrew this week and it’s called Frying Master. Frying Master is a Unity-based game, by Reddit user “LazyOx199“, which allows you to use the gyroscope (or analogue sticks+buttons) to cook up stuff in a frying pan. Right now, the game is still work in progress and you can only cook meat patties and square piece of steak but it’s unique and fun nonetheless!

To fry some stuff on your PSVita, check out its Reddit thread and download the VPK from there.

Conclusion

All these homebrew releases in such a short period of time are a nice reminder that PSVita homebrew releases aren’t over yet and that development is still going on. If you want to look at other interesting stuff, you can check out Nikita Krapivin’s recent work on getting a PC screen streaming solution with input to work on the PSVita through the PSM framework! Obviously, you should still use Moonlight if you have a supported Nvidia GPU as the PSM app only works @ around 5FPS.

As for now, you can start the year on a better note with the above releases because messing around with homebrew is always fun! 🙂

Updated with some more information about what Krapivin’s doing.
