It is quite surprising to see homebrew games being developed for the PSVita even though it’s been hacked for over 2 years and it was never a very popular console to begin with. This time around, we got Zombiebound Reloaded by VitaHEX (who re-emerged after a pretty long absence) and a substantial update to Rinnegatmante’s VitaQuake II.
Zombiebound Reloaded by VitaHEX

If you’re a fan of sending zombies back to the grave, then Zombiebound Reloaded is a game that you MUST try out on your Vita!
For quite a while, it seemed that VitaHEX was done with developing PSVita homebrew but then, in mid-January, he revealed he was working on a Unity-based zombie shooting game, similar to the RotU mod for COD 4, for the PSVita on Twitter.
Then, on January 23, he released an alpha version of his game which is called Zombiebound Reloaded to patrons of his Patreon account. Finally, it was released to the general public on January 30 which means that now, everybody can get some more zombie killing action on their hacked PSVita console!
As of right now, Zombiebound Reloaded, which is the successor of Zombiebound by the same developer, has the following features:
- There are 4 weapons namely a pistol, a pump-action shotgun, a semi-automatic shotgun and an AK-47
- The latter 3 are to be bought through in-game points while the pistol is always available and has unlimited ammo
- Good performance with no lag and short load times
- A pretty good controls scheme that uses the right trigger for shooting
- It comes with two levels
- These are named Farmhouse, which is a small map, and Abandoned Store which is a medium-sized map which is good if you like it when things get a bit hectic
To grab Zombiebound Reloaded, check out this link and install the VPK you download from it; the VPK is 94MB large so it’ll take a while to install. Zombiebound Reloaded is also vailable on VitaDB but VHBB crashed on my PSVita when I chose the Zombiebound Reloaded store item so your mileage may vary.
VitaHEX has said in a Patreon post that he plans to add more features to the game so make you sure you stay tuned for future updates to Zombiebound Reloaded if you’re a fan of tearing zombies to shreds
vitaQuake II updated to version 2.0
It seems that Rinnegatamante never quite gets tired of developing stuff for the PSVita and this time, he brought us vitaQuake II 2.0 which takes this 1997 game to a whole new level! Among the new features that vitaQuake II version 2.0 brings along, we find:
- Support for high resolution texture packs so that you can play Quake II with textures that are much more detailed
With high resolution packs, you can drastically improve how Quake II looks on your PSVita but beware the lengthened load times. (Texture pack used is this one)
- These will surely lengthen load times and might hit performance so expect these to happen when using higher resolution texture packs.
- Textures in TGA and JPG format are now supported which means that many mods found online can be installed
- Official mission packs can now be played on vitaQuake II so you can get more Quake II action if that’s your thing!
- There are 2 official mission packs which are called The Reckoning and Ground Zero
- The keyboard in the Quake II console is now accessible by pressing SELECT while in-game
- Better performance thanks to optimisation of rendering code, reduced memory usage and improved analogue stick accuracy
For more information about vitaQuake II, check out its Wololo /talk page which also includes links to high res texture packs that are verified to be working. If you want to download it directly, check out this link and grab the VPK to install it. The game needs data files which are to be put in ux0:/data/quake2 and accepts data files for both the demo and full version.
Conclusion
Thankfully, VitaHEX and Rinnegamante are still working on cool stuff and it seems that the former is currently experimenting with a Silent Hill clone made with Unity and the latter is hard at work porting Super Mario War to hacked Vita and PSTV consoles!
