The glory days for the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 have been over for quite some time but even though the 9th generation of game consoles is right around the corner, dedicated homebrew developers aren’t quite ready to let these consoles enter a state of eternal slumber just yet! In this article, we’ll be taking a look at UDK Ultimate which is a modded Unreal Engine 3 SDK with support for creating PS3/XBOX360 binaries!
What is UDK Ultimate?

Borderlands 2 is a massively-popular game making use of Unreal Engine 3 and games such as Mortal Kombat 11, which was released earlier this year, are still making use of it!
As the article’s title reveals, UDK Ultimate is a modified version of Epic Game’s UDK, which is the SDK for the closed-source Unreal Engine 3, that comes with support for creating PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 binaries. In other words, this means that homebrew ports of Unreal Engine 3 games (which are still being released to this day) can be created for the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 provided that one has access to their source code and assets.
UDK Ultimate was created by fellow Brazilian developer Nidal Nijm after he obtained the source code for the PlayStation 3/XBOX 360 ports of an older version of the Unreal Engine 3 engine but making it was no walk in the park. According to him, the source code he managed obtain was incomplete so he had to recreate the missing files himself, something that he was only able to achieve after studying C++ for 2 years and with help from numerous famous developers in the PlayStation 3 hacking community including Habib, Joonie, esc0rtd3w and DeViL303 among others. Then in May 2017, he released a complete version of his work online to little fanfare but his dedication didn’t falter as seen in the next section of this article.
UDK Ultimate recently gets PS3HEN support & its developer working on an original game for the PlayStation 3/XBOX 360 making use of it
Moving forward to the 4th of September, UDK Ultimate received a significant update which brought about PS3HEN support in order to allow non-CFW PS3 models to use the binaries that it creates. To make this possible, the EBOOT.BIN signing process was modified to be compatible with PS3HEN’s ways of hacking the system.

Currently Nidal Nijm is working on creating an original game using Unreal Engine 3 for use with the PS3/X360 in his game development ‘studio’!
Finally, let’s move to the question on everyone’s mind which is “Are there any games ported to the PS3/X360 using UDK Ultimate available for download?” and unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no. Due to the large amount of effort it takes to write a game with Unreal Engine 3, complexity involved, lack of open-source Unreal Engine 3 projects and the timing of this release (years after the PS3’s heyday), nobody has created/ported any game with UDK Ultimate’s PS3 & X360 exporting functionality but Nidal Nijm will be changing that soon.
Right now, Nidal Nijm is working on creating an original game that takes cues from one of the most popular cross-platform titles around so that his project will finally be put to good use and the PS3 hacking community will finally be able to enjoy the fruits of his work. He plans to publicise some information about it in the immediate future so that’s certainly something to check it out when it lands!
