While the PSVita has its own game library and can emulate numerous other consoles pretty well including the PSP, the ability to run homebrew gives rise to even more games! In this article, we’ll be looking at an update to VitaQuake III, a port of Lolicopocalypse & VitaGrafix Configurator 3.0 which comes with VitaGrafix 5.0+ support.

Homebrew Games: VitaQuake III 0.9 & Lolicopocalypse port

If you’ve ever been interested in older FPS games, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard of the famous Quake series with its first 3 installments being the most famous of the bunch. As a result, at least one of these 3 games (Quake I-III) has been ported to numerous hacked consoles including the PSVita, PSP, 3DS and the Nintendo Switch among many others.

Quake III Arena is lots of fun but Urban Terror spices things up quite a bit so it may be a worthy game to check out

Now, the PlayStation Vita’s port of Quake III, VitaQuake III by Rinnegatamante, has received a pretty substantial update which continues to improve upon the already enjoyable homebrew port. This update, with version number 0.9 brings along:

  • Experimental support for Urban Terror – this is a free multiplayer FPS game based on the Quake III arena engine that falls into the tactical shooter genre
  • A significant performance boost thanks to the addition of dynamic library support to OpenArena’s core
  • The graphics renderer received some optimisations which improve both speed and memory usage
  • A downloader for data files has been added for when game files aren’t found
  • Loading mods & missionpacks from inside the game itself now works properly
  • Background rendering is now enabled on the main menu
  • Various bug fixes and minor improvements including the addition of a condition that prevents the screen from turning off on its own in certain situations

Lolicopocalypse on the PSVita works pretty well although the game is typical not a run-of-the-mill title (Screenshot from own testing)

Moving onto a newly released port, dots-tb and teakhanirons of Team CBPS have come up with yet another release for the PSVita and this time it’s a port of game called Lolicopocalypse which has seen ports on the Wii, GP2X and even TI Calculators. This game, by quasist, is a roguelike title and has a creepy-feeling atmosphere so if wanna try out something a little unusual, it may be worth your while to give it a go.

Utility Update: VitaGrafix Configurator 3.0 released with VitaGrafix 5.0+ support

Kirezar’s VitaGrafix Configurator has now been updated with support for VitaGrafix 5.0 so you can safely update your plugin now while still being able to easily configure it!

Keeping on the subject of games but focusing more on commercial titles, VitaGrafix Configurator 3.0 by Kirezar has been released. For those out of the loop, VitaGrafix Configurator is a homebrew utility that lets you manage VitaGrafix’s configuration without having to use a text editor on your PC or through VitaShell.

The version that was just released, version 3.0, brings along one major feature which is support for VitaGrafix 5.0 and newer which makes use of a re-written parser/interpreter, while maintaining compatibility VitaGrafix 4.x patches, together with adding support for some more features.

You may grab VitaGrafix Configurator 3.0 from its GitHub Release page or through VHBB as it’s available on VitaDB. Kirezar notes that you should keep your ‘patchlist.txt’ file updated by getting the latest version from here.

Conclusion

Other than the PSVita scene, the Switch scene also received another port of VVVVVV and this time, it’s a homebrew one as an official port already exists on the Nintendo Store. This port, which came about due to VVVVVV going open-source a few days ago, allows you to use the files for the PC version thus saving you money if you already own the game. Bsnes-hd beta 10 is out and some RetroArch 4K vertical bezel overlays for Metal Slug 3, NBA Jam and other titles have also been released.
