Unlike the Switch, the PSVita doesn’t officially support outputting its screen to a TV but with Xerpi’s udcd_uvc, you can play Vita games on a big screen pretty well! As a result, some have decided to create their own TV docks and now, Crash-Cortez has released VitaDock MPV Beta with much less overhead; in this article, we’ll also be looking at the recent release of byuu 1.0/1.1.

Starting off with a little backstory, VitaDock was originally a community-based project by xCorra that aimed to bring a Raspberry Pi-based dock that can connect to your TV letting you output your Vita’s screen seamlessly by just placing it on top of it. However, this project which garnered a great deal of interest when it was announced last April ended up quite ill-fated since its creator xCorra decided to just disappear off the internet in late October 2019 after a series of delays with no IndieGoGo backers ever receiving the hardware they paid for!

Afterwards, Crash-Cortez who was part of the VitaDock Team decided to release the software that was being worked on for the VitaDock so that individuals could create their own VitaDock with a Raspberry Pi. Following that, he released a final VitaDock VLC image and now, he’s released a beta version of VitaDock MPV which aims to be lightweight as possible to deliver the best possible performance!
Unlike VitaDock VLC, the current version of the VitaDock MPV image allows you to run MPV directly from console with the desktop environment being disabled in order to reduce overhead and potentially improve performance. In the future, there are plans to add RetroPie (an emulation solution) to the VitaDock MPV image and Crash-Cortez has already managed to get it working but there are still some bugs that need to be addressed before it’s publicly released.

When it comes to device compatibility, no list has been provided but most development has been done with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ so this model is most likely supported – it’s possible that the RPi Zero, Zero W and 4 get supported as Crash-Cortez was able to acquire the boards.
Emulation News: byuu 1.0 & 1.1 released letting you emulate 25 systems with higan’s accuracy
Nowadays, many people use RetroArch in order to make emulating multiple systems easier but other solutions are still quite popular including byuu’s higan which focuses first and foremost on highly accurate emulation. Earlier this week, developer ‘byuu’ released version 1.0/1.1 (which is being considered a milestone) of a multi-system emulator that’s also named byuu which aims to combine higan’s accuracy with the bsnes’ simplicity and performance.
Byuu 1.1, which was recently released, combines what makes higan & bsnes great and future plans for the multi-system are pretty ambitious!
This was achieved by improving performance in all of higan’s 25 emulated systems, all of which are supported by byuu, and these are:
- The NES, SNES, GameBoy (Colour) and Advance
- Sega SG-1000, Master System, Game Gear and Genesis
- TurboGrafix 16 & the SuperGrafix
- MSX and the MSX2
- WonderSwan (Colour), the Pocket Challenge V2 and the Neo Geo Pocket (Colour)
Now that version 1.0 has been released, plans have been laid out for future versions of byuu which include support for other systems like the PlayStation 1, N64 and NDS through the work of other emulation projects, a save state manager, cheat code editor, rewind, runahead and much more.
