Despite the PlayStation Vita not being a commercial success and only receiving definitive native hacks over 4 years after its release, its homebrew scene is still flourishing with Team CBPS being behind a significant amount of development on the console. In this article, we’re going to look at what was introduced during Saturday’s State of CBPS stream which will surely include something to pique the interest of all Vita owners!
A look at homebrew, plugin and game mod releases
Members of Team CBPS made a name for themselves through the release of various pieces of homebrew and plugins including SharpScale, Music Premium and BGFTP among others with some members also getting into game modding. With State of CBPS, the team continues to contribute to the Vita scene with a diverse list of release announcements which include:
- An updated version of Xerpi’s udcd_uvc plugin which lets one stream their Vita’s screen over USB at 1280×720 (720p) @ 30FPS thus allowing for games, such as Catherine: Full Body, which have HD mods to be enjoyed in their full resolution!
Persona 4 Golden is one of the most beloved titles on the PSVita and one will soon be able to enjoy it in HD or Full HD!
- This was achieved through work by cuevavirus which Xerpi accepted into the ‘master’ branch of his plugin meaning that we’ll probably be seeing an official update to udcd_uvc soon!
- Persona 4 Golden HD patch allowing the game to be rendered at 720p AND 1080p
- This doesn’t seem to have been released yet
- Kogre’s Mountain which is a board game supporting 2-4 players
- DePlayEnabler which enables Video Debug Mode allowing one to play regular video files such as ‘mp4’ files without importing them through QCMA and being able to access files from anywhere by browsing the file system of partitions such as ux0
- TrophyShot, a plugin which takes which takes a screenshot whenever you get a trophy
- Magic Automatic Fake User Input, a plugin that lets you record and replay input sequences
- This could potentially allow the rise of assisted speed runs on the console!
- More Custom DLC for Superbeat XONiC Extended which include 20 PlayStation 4 DLC songs and 10 exclusive ones
- EmergencyMount, a kernel plugin providing soft brick protection by allowing you to mount partitions if you press the triangle button while booting
- This plugin provides protection from misbheaving plugins but if you’re messing with low-level stuff such as enso_ex, it will probably not be able to help
- Vita-BootSound which is a plugin that lets you play a WAV file while your console is booting similar to a start-up sound on computers
- Super Stoner 420 and an upcoming Asteroids-like game by @realusagichan
- DolceSDK, a VitaSDK port which comes with various improvements with CommonDialogs being one of the most notable as it allows for native PSVita dialogue boxes in homebrew
- Work is also being done on a port to the Vita of OpenFNaF which is a WIP re-implementation of the first three Five Nights at Freddy’s games
- Lots of work still needs to be done on OpenFNaF itself so no ETAs have been given for this!
- ScoreHax was also announced which is a plugin allowing one to inject their own values in online leaderboard scores
Team CBPS unveils CBPSDB & efforts at making use of the Vita 1000’s mystery port & the Slim’s micro-USB port!
Shifting focus from the usual stuff to other announcements, Team CBPS has also introduced CBPSDB which is a database of homebrew and plugins, similar to VitaDB, allowing one to download their favourite piece of homebrew directly from the website. While not as advanced as VitaDB, CBPSDB is lighter on the PSVita’s browser and allows one to easily download homebrew provided that they have TheFlow’s Download Enabler plugin installed – a client for the PlayStation Vita is also in the making although no release date has been announced yet.
Team CBPS members have also been messing around with the Vita 1000’s mystery port and the Slim’s micro-USB port and it seems that their efforts have paid off. This is because through special cables, what seems to be a breakout board on the Vita 1000 and external power delivery, they have been able to plug in external USB storage in the form of a pen drive to the PlayStation Vita and it was easily recognised and mounted via VitaShell. It is likely that more information will be released about this development in the future provided that it’s been showcased.
Conclusion
You may see the whole State of CBPS stream, which lasted a little over 20 minutes, by following viewing the YouTube video linked below or by following this link! There’s no doubt that the future holds more cool stuff for the PlayStation Vita’s homebrew scene but hopefully, we’ll also see Team CBPS taking a more professional approach to PR with their official forum being a step in the right direction as it mostly focuses on sharing the team’s work with little childishness.
