VITAforecast, Bookr Mod and other trinkets – GekiHEN

The deadline of GekiHEN was on the 19th of March so obviously some people have scrambled to get their homebrew published. The result? Incomplete software that doesn’t have too many features… That’s the case for some of the latest stuff but not VitaForecast so don’t worry ‘Joel16’ 🙂

What’s VitaForecast?

As the name suggests, it’s a Weather app, a la the iOS one. This one uses openweathermap.org as its data source however. Upon opening the app, you must input in a Zip-code and the country code. If your country doesn’t have zip-codes, you may need to mess around to get it working; using the first three letters of a postcode along with my country code worked for me. The following information is displayed:

  • Temperature (Max and Min for the day)
  • Cloud coverage
  • Humidity
  • Wind speed
  • Atmospheric pressure

The developer has also promised a 5-day weather forecast feature if the homebrew is well received (a feature which I personally think is the most important in a weather app). Everything is presented in a nice and clean UI which makes the application feel more professional.

What’s Bookr Mod Vita?

This is where stuff starts getting a bit ugly… As some of you may know, Bookr is a PDF,DJVU,TXT viewer that supports some other formats than those mentioned here. The catch with the ‘port’ on the Vita is that it misses a very important feature.. that is PDF support. Bookr Mod Vita only opens TXT files which makes it a tad pointless if it’s not updated since VitaShell can open TXT files without any issues. Hopefully this will be updated

An unfinished port of Bookr for the Vita..

and it’ll be a worthy entry.. hopefully.

What’s Galactic Federation?

This is yet another homebrew that’s far from finished. It’s a top down action Sci-Fi RPG game in which you can choose between 4 classes and kill the enemies. There’s only one small dungeon but at least you get a boss fight. The developer ‘The Suicidal Robot’ appeals for feedback on the game in order to make it better in the future. Let’s hope that this entry gets updated because it has promise and I’m looking forward to seeing it a a finished homebrew game on the Vita.

Conclusion

The GekiHEN contest brought us some awesome stuff and I look forward to seeing updates to current homebrew. That being said, I sincerely hope that homebrew in an unfinished state gets updated and becomes useful. To get the homebrew, simply go to the GekiHEN site or use the Homebrew Browser app.
