Crazy Traffic Jam 3D homebrew game released for the PSVita

When one thinks of homebrew, emulators and game ports usually spring to mind. While those make up a great amount of popular homebrew, there are also original homebrew games developed from the base up for the device. This time around, team VitaHEX decided to develop Crazy Traffic Jam 3D for us to enjoy.

What’s Crazy Traffic Jam 3D?

The game’s a pretty simple game in which you avoid cars in ongoing traffic with your d-pad. You can collect coins, that increase your score, and lightning boosts that speed up your car (and make it invincible, it’s probably a bug, eh?).

The game has a top-down perspective and its graphics are 2.5D-esque which are quite decent considering 3D capability in regards to Vita homebrew.

In terms of completeness, I would say that there’s a tad more to be desired however. I would really like to see some way to increase difficulty (maybe it could do it automatically by increasing your speed as your score increases) and possibly some different backdrops. Some better music also wouldn’t hurt.

In-game screenshot. You play as the red car.

As a game that you play for a few minutes at a time, I would say it’s pretty decent if more development is done on it; I would say that it would become a game comparable to Android/iOS favourites like Crossy Road that you play for a few minutes at a go.

On the technical side, Crazy Traffic Jam 3D is using Rinnegatamante’s Lua Player Plus which demonstrates that LPP can in fact be used for homebrew games with 3D graphics!

Conclusion

To get this homebrew, you just need to install either it via VHBB (which gets it from VitaDB) or by installing the VPK from the link below. I personally think that this game really shows off how well an indie developer could create a game that feels like a high-end game if more work is put into it. Hopefully, more work will be put into this homebrew game because I believe it has potential!

Should you have any issues, report them on the thread below to VitaHEX or “Sakis Rg” who did the programming and art.

N.B: I have included my opinion in the writing of this article in order to show the different aspects of the homebrew game at hand.
