Freedom Wars English Patch released – Voice Synthesis is now possible

$

0

Getting games released over to English is a fun thing for us Westerners but we don’t always get what we expected. Thanks to GBATemp member “Roah”, you may now enjoy the full Japanese version of Freedom Wars on the Vita with Voice Synthesis.

What’s Freedom Wars?

This game is an action RPG developed by SCE Studio Japan (i.e Sony) for the PSVita. The setting of the game is in a distant future in which most humans are imprisoned in penal city-states that wage war against each other. Players must fight enemies in order to support their penal city-state.

Freedom Wars was released in June 2014 in Japan and was a great success there; it subsequently got a translation to English released in late October 2014.

How do I get the patch?

First of all, you may ask “Why do I need the patch?”

The patch is there so you can use the voice synthesis feature that Sony decided to scrap. The voice synthesis function is a text to voice functionality that can be used for accessory customisation. While it’s not necessary for the game to function properly, it’s still a fun thing to have especially if you want to listen to some anime-esque Engrish!

Voice Synthesis feature. Image from Wikipedia

To install it, you have to do the following:

  • Install the Japanese version of the Freedom Wars (PCSC00054) via MaiDumpTool. You can get a game cartridge online and dump it yourself to go down the recommended legal route.
  • Install the version 1.23 patch via MaiDumpTool.
  • Download the ENPatch archive listed below.
  • Extract the archive and copy the files to ux0:app/PCSC00054/patch_v0120/
  • Remove these files from ux0:app/PCSC00054/patch_v0120/
    • patch_v0120_cmn.eaf
    • patch_v0120_jpn.eaf
    • patch_v0120_rgn_japan.eaf
  • Enjoy your game with voice synthesis!

The patch developer did not translate the game but simply used the translation data from the English version and planted it into the Japanese version. If you have any issues, ask “Roah” on GBATemp for help

mGBA 0.6.0 released for the PSVita and other devices

$
0
0

Emulation is one of the highlights of the PSVita and emulator updates are always welcome. This time around, mGBA, one of the best, if not the best, GBA emulators, has been updated to version 0.6.0.

What’s mGBA?

mGBA is an emulator that’s available on multiple systems which emulates the GBA and the GB and GBC since version 0.5. There are various systems that support mGBA and these are:

  • Windows, Macintosh and Linux PCs
  • The PSVita
  • The Wii
  • The Nintendo 3DS

The folks over at mGBA are also developing medusa which is a Nintendo DS emulator which is currently in alpha 2 stage and is available for Windows and Macintosh systems.

The emulator has a decent GUI, zip file support, frameskip support, a framerate counter and various other features for you to enjoy; all of which make it a worthwhile emulator to have on your PSVita.Street Fighter II Turbo in mGBA

What’s been updated/changed in mGBA 0.6.0?

The following is what’s been updated/added in mGBA 0.6.0:

  • A library view has been added
  • Translations to Italian, Spanish and German have been added for QT GUI ports (computer ports)
  • Various debugging features
  • Last directory loaded is now saved on the PSVita, Wii and 3DS. That means that if you opened a ROM from ux0:data/mGBA/GBA ROMs. you’ll be in that directory again when you re-open the emulator
  • Various bug fixes to give you a better experience

I can’t seem to enable the library view on the PSVita so I’m assuming that it’s for the PC versions of the emulator. It is recommended you update to the latest version as it could fix any issues you may have with your games. Make sure to check the full changelog to get a more indepth recollection of what’s been changed.

How do I get it?

To get it for your PSVita, you need to do the following:

  • Download the VPK from the link below
  • Copy it to your Vita via FTP/USB
  • Install it via VitaShell (it doesn’t require extended/unsafe permissions)
  • Enjoy!

That’s it! You may now emulate GB/C/A games on your Vita without much of any issues. Remember, this is a safe homebrew so you can only access ux0:data

Minecraft PSP [Lamecraft Mod] v2.0! – Lamecraft in 2017?

$

You’d think the PSP homebrew community would be dead today, but fortunately that’s not the case. Even with the VITA scene slowly rising, the PSP scene developers still haven’t given up, and this is the case with Minecraft PSP. Minecraft PSP like many other before it, is a lamecraft mod for the Playstation Portable. Lamecraft is a PSP homebrew that mimics the same concept as the popular PC game that is now available on numerous devices, Minecraft. Lamecraft was one of PSP’s best homebrews back in the day, and also the winner of the PSP Genesis competion in 2011. Although it’s worth mentioning that woolio’s additions to this mod, basically makes it an entirely different game. The amount of features make it actually look like a port of Minecraft based on an older revision.

Minecraft PSP

Minecraft PSP

Minecraft PSP v2.0 – Screenshot 2

I said it before and I’ll say it again, the numerous amount of changes that woolio has made to this makes this an entirely different game compared to the original lamecraft. It’s more based on a survival mode gameplay of minecraft and offers a plethora of new features.

The latest version, 2.0 includes the following changes:

  • .schematic to .lms converter (you can now convert pc worlds to minecraft psp format)
  • Mip-texturing
  • World height increased to 112
  • New world generator
  • Canes are back
  • Fixed dungeons and mob spawners
  • True sheep
  • Grass generation
  • Nice main menu and button sprites
  • Upgraded player physics
  • Sleep in bed player position
  • You can not sleep if monsters are nearby
  • TNT kills mobs
  • 12 music dics
  • All minecraft PC tracks
  • Zombies drop bones if killed by TNT
  • Creepers drop discs if killed by TNT
  • Carpets
  • Redstone blocks, coal blocks, hay bale
  • Hay bale lowers damage if player falls on it
  • Lava infinite source (4 lava blocks)
  • Water busket + Lava = obsidian
  • Lava busket + Water = cobblestone
  • GreenLand preset map

This is definitely something I’d recommend worth checking out, even if you have Minecraft installed on other devices. The fact that this game is actually homebrew, is very impressive. You can find the download link here, or here if you’re using a PSP-1000. The full source code can be found here.

Setting up your SD2Vita adapter – Formatting your microSD can be done on Windows

$

Disclaimer from Aurora: I have not tested the microSD adapter myself so I can’t say with certainty that this guide is 100% correct; this guide is here so that you’re prepared when you get your adapter from whichever source. Wololo is not affiliated with the microSD cards being sold on eBay that are preformatted and are there solely to buy at your discretion! If you have any buyer protection issues, report them on eBay.

Having cool stuff like SD2Vita is awesome but that means that you need to do some work on your side for it to work. This article is here so you know what to do when you get your adapter. This guide should work with all SD2Vita adapters since all production runs should be based on the same specification by ‘xyz’ of Team Molecule. This guide assumes that you’re somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to the Vita homebrew scene.

How do I set up my SD2Vita adapter?

If you don’t know what it is, go check out an older article explaining what the adapter is in more detail. It’s a microSD adapter for the PSVita via the game card slot in a nutshell if you don’t feel like reading everything.

To start off, you need the following:

  • A computer running Windows Vista or newer (XP should work too)
  • A PSVita running FW 3.60
  • A microSD card
  • A microSD card reader (you can use an SD card reader and an SD to microSD adapter)
  • WinSCP/Filezilla or some other FTP client – (I personally use WinSCP) https://winscp.net/eng/download.php
  • Win32 Disk Imager – https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
  • The driver for microSD adapter (SD2Vita). 2 versions exist. Download them from the link below.
  • Download the zzBlank.img file for your microSD from the link below.
  • Some time!

After getting the stuff you need, you can start off with installing the driver:

  1. If you plan to use your microSD adapter as ux0:, back up your Vita memory card to your computer. You can do this via USB so that it’s quicker. If you want to use your SD2Vita as uma0: (external memory), skip this step
  2. Move your ux0:/tai folder to ur0:/tai so that you can use your adapter even if you don’t have the Vita card inserted and it may avoid any path issues while mounting the microSD card. ur0 is the internal memory of your Vita – It’s available on Slim models, PSTVs and even the FAT models (even though Sony doesn’t want you using it).
  3. Add the sd2vita adapter driver to ur0:/tai/config.txt under the *KERNEL section. The line you’ll be adding will probably be “ur0:tai/gamesd.skprx”. Now, you’ve installed the driver on your PSVita.

Using Win32 Disk Imager to prepare your microSD card

Now, you can prepare the microSD card:

  1. Put the microSD card into the adapter and wait for it to show up on your computer
  2. Open up Win32 Disk Imager, select zzBlank.img from your computer, make sure you’re selecting the microSD in the drive selector and press WRITE.
  3. Unplug your microSD and pop it back in.
  4. Format your disk from Windows (it should ask you to but go to My Computer and right click on the microSD) with the following options:
    • exFAT as File system
    • Select Default allocation size as Allocation Unit Size
    • Don’t put in a volume label
  5. You’ve now finished your microSD! You can copy the backup of your Vita memory card if you went down that route.

After that, simply pop the microSD in your adapter, run HENkaku on your PSVita and enjoy the extra storage!

Conclusion

Modisah (moredrugsmore3somes on Reddit) has already shipped out 150 adapters and he should be doing another thousand soon enough. There’s also Srident’s adapter that will probably be available for order in a few days.

I personally think that smaller community projects should be supported by the readers rather than big production runs from Asian manufacturers but that’s just my opinion.

Disclaimer from Aurora: While I have contacted Srident on Twitter/Reddit and he seems like a nice person, neither I nor Wololo can guarantee anything. The decision to buy one is yours to make and there’s adequate buyer protection from eBay/PayPal so you should be covered. Read eBay/PayPal’s buyer protection documents in order to know where you stand. As always, I support members of the community more than large Asian manufacturers so I appeal to you to support them too as you’ll be getting a superior product made with love for the community!

Modsiah’s 150 adapters (see note below as more are coming soon) were vaporized in an instant so now, you have your second (and third and fourth etc) chance to acquire your adapter! This time, it’s Srident’s adapter, which we covered earlier this month, that’s up for order!

What’s the SD2Vita adapter?

In a nutshell, it’s an adapter that lets you use microSD cards on your PSVita. You just have to put it in your gamecard slot and use your microSD card as ux0 or uma0 after setting it up. To set it up, check the article linked at the bottom of the post.

Image showing off the adapters on Srident’s Twitter page!

Great! How can I order it then?

It’s better you know some facts before ordering it regarding buyer protection and whatnot:

  • The price is €15 and you have to pay €1.20 shipping (applies to all countries). If you have pre-ordered it, check your mailbox as you’ll get a link to get it for €13.50 instead!
  • You can buy the adapter off eBay, which is a websites that accepts PayPal, so if you feel you’ve been wronged simply contact eBay buyer’s protection.
  • The adapter is based on Xyz’s design with Gadoarch’s modification to make it simpler to produce.
  • When you order the adapter, you will not get a case so you’ll only get a bare PCB. Cases for the adapter that you can insert in your Vita may pop up later – Adapter cases may not be compatible with SD2Vita adapters they weren’t designed for due to small differences in physical dimensions.
  • For your convenience, the adapters are tested and are fully working.
  • Shipping should take about 3-10 days depending on where you live as these come from France.
  • The microSD card socket is gold-pinned for better durability.
  • The adapter only works on FW 3.60 so 3.61+ won’t work.

The above is based upon public information and some questions I asked personally to Srident myself in which he answered to clear up any misconceptions. Now then, go press on the eBay link below and get your SD2Vita adapter before they sell out!

It seems that Srident will be posting links on Twitter so check those out or your mailbox if you pre-ordered.

Check out Srident’s Twitter to get the latest link for the next batch! They should be up at about 7-7:30PM GMT+2 tomorrow

3DSident v0.7.6 – NNID info, WiFi slots info, Parental control info + more

$

I think at this point this program displays almost every available information that you can possibly get through software.

3DSident, like PSPident and VITAident is a identity tool for your 3DS. It displays numerous amounts of information that the console does not provide.

This update includes a bunch of new features such as NNID (Nintendo network ID) information, WiFi slots (displays SSID, password and mac address), Parental control information such as the pin code, the registered email address and the secret answer. There’s also many other features which its commonly used for like getting the screen type (IPS / TN), checking for faulty ports like the headphone jack or ac adapter.

3DSident comes in two versions, one that is user friendly and features a modernized UI, the other is more minimal and displays all the information on one screen.

Changelog v0.7.6:

Original Version:

  • Removed unnecessary config info. (Original version aims to only display crucial information, and is therefore kept as minimal as possible).
  • Refactored ANY_KEY, which fixed a bug with some earphones causing the original version to exit immediately.
  • Now displays estimated battery voltage. (Thanks to Sono and Sykhro for helping me with the voltage calculations).
  • Now displays number of NAND titles installed.
  • Displays adapter state. (connected / disconnected) -> This is different from the charging status.
  • FS_USER functions used for file handling (screenshot stuff).
  • Displays region when showing system version. (Example 11.4.0-37’U’)
  • Displays WiFi slot info – SSID, password and MAC.
  • Displays host ID (IP Address).
  • New NNID Info using ATCU account data blocks.
  • Displays both NNID user name and principal ID as before.
  • Displays Mii name.
  • Displays NNID persistent ID.
  • Displays NNID transferable ID base.
  • Displays NNID country/timezone.
  • New colours for Misc tab, NNID tab and WiFi slots.
  • Displays home menu ID.
  • Fixed a few minor glitches when refreshing values.
  • Code clean up, refactors, removed dupes, fixed overflown buffers, more consistency + minor optimizations etc.

GUI Version:

  • All of the above, except for the color and removing config stuff.
  • More explicit storage info. Displays used/free/total storage info of the four FS_SystemMediaTypes with storage bars.
  • Minor aesthetic changes, now the subject and values are two different colors.
  • Gets inserted card type (NAND / CTR).
  • Fast scroll using circle pad.
  • You can now use the start button to exit instead of scrolling down to the exit tab.
  • Config info now displays the following parental control information;
  • Displays parental control pin.
  • Displays parental control email address.
  • Displays parental control secret answer. (Thanks Fenrir for reminding me I was one byte off!)

3D hardware accelerated rendering now added to Lua Player Plus for the Vita thanks to frangar!

0

Lua had been a very popular programming language in the PSP days and the Vita has its share of Lua applications. Now, frangar and Rinnegatamante (a.k.a the guy that will never stop making the Vita’s homebrew experience better) have added 3D rendering to Lua Player Plus for the Vita.

What’s Lua Player Plus?

Lua Player Plus is a Lua interpreter for the PSVita that works under HENkaku on FW 3.60. Lua is a pretty popular and versatile programming language that was pretty popular in the PSP days with various homebrew games such as Lua Snake and Lights Out. The Vita also got its own share of Lua homebrew such as Adrenaline States Manager by team ONElua, with whom Rinnegatamante had some disputes. Some of the features of Lua Player Plus include:

Lua Player Plus

  • Support for TFF fonts.
  • Sound support.
  • Support for BMP/PNG/JPG images.
  • Various support for input methods.
  • Built-in rescaler to make porting homebrew from Lua Player Plus for the 3DS easier.

All these features, the fact that it’s open-source and various debug features make LPP a great way to start off coding for your PSVita!

What’s the deal with 3D hardware accelerated rendering?

This is an amazing milestone for LPP and the homebrew scene as the Vita is somewhat lacking in 3D homebrew as we only got some demos and an unfinished (yet interesting and cool) game called Project Void which you can find on the GekiHEN page. 3D accelerated rendering may bring us some 3D homebrew games for our PSVitas and Rinnegatamante may have a game up his sleeve to show us that 3D homebrew games with Lua are perfectly possible! Maybe someone will pick up N64 emulation for the Vita if more developments are made on 3D hardware acceleration.

Stay tuned for more information on possible future releases and if you have the time, get into Lua programming yourself since there are some tutorials online. If you have any concerns, ask frangar or Rinnegatamante on Twitter, GitHub or elsewhere.

VitaDoom updated to support SoundFX and analogue sticks thanks to aagallag

DOOM is probably one of the best games out there and I personally think it stood the test of time as almost every device ends up having a port of it. The PSVita port was relatively lacking but thanks to “aagallag”, we’re got a more desirable experience for our beloved console.

What’s VitaDoom?

VitaDOOM is one of the oldest pieces of homebrew available for the PSVita in the HENkaku days as it’s even in the showcase section of henkaku.xyz! VitaDOOM is even available for Rejuvinate so the port for HENkaku is actually a port of a port as the base of VitaDOOM is DoomPSP-0.04 S.S. b5. It is important to note that this port only supports the original DOOM WADs which means DOOM, DOOM II, Ultimate DOOM, Plutonia and TNT expansions. Framerate for me is about 34 (it has a built-in FPS counter) and there aren’t any fancy features such as running/aiming (I know that aiming is not a part of the original DOOM experience).

DOOM was originally ported to the Vita by MrNetrix/Netrix in July 2015 but now, developer “aagallag” decided to add some features to make the game better.

What’s been updated/changed?

The following has been added to the PSVita port of DOOM:

  • SoundFX got enabled which means that you get sound effects but still no music (which is a shame as the music is probably one of the best parts in the DOOM games).
  • Weapon switching got fixed as the right analogue stick is now enabled for that purpose. The right analogue stick is only enabled when you’re using the d-pad for control. Changing weapons when you’re using the left analogue stick for player control is via the d-pad.
  • There is now a toggle for d-pad or analogue control on the start screen of the homebrew.

Options screen you get when you start VitaDOOM

  • Update 1.1: Bug fix when you change to the chainsaw since the chainsaw triggered the map before.

The update is pretty substantial as analogue stick control, fixed weapon switching and sound effects are pretty important things if you want a decent DOOM experience.

Conclusion

In order to get the game, just get the VPK from the link below and install it. After installing it, place your original WAD files (DOOM data files) in ux0:/data/doom/WADs. This game is a safe homebrew so it doesn’t have permission to access any other directories than ux0:/data and the folders inside. Now, I hope that someone will either improve upon this port or try porting Zandronum because Brutal DOOM on the PSVita would be awesome! (or any other DOOM mods for that matter).

If you have any issues report them to “aagallag” on GitHub.

What should you know before HENkaku Ensō lands!

$
0
0

HENkaku Ensō, by Team Molecule, should land today or tomorrow depending on the country you live in. You’ll probably be too hyped up to read anything after it’s out so this article serves the purpose of getting you up to speed with what HENkaku Ensō does or doesn’t do before it lands.

What is HENkaku Ensō?

HENkaku Ensō is like an untethered jailbreak for your PSVita. This means that you don’t have to reapply taiHEN/HENkaku every time you reboot your PSVita. This is very useful for HENkaku users as it saves you time from installing the hack every time you boot up your Vita and it also means that you can use your PSVita’s homebrew straight away when you boot it up. This will make HENkaku/taiHEN like a real CFW that we used to see in the PSP days. You will also be able to use your microSD from an SD2Vita adapter at boot time apparently. HENkaku Ensō should work on the Vita FAT, Vita Slim and the PSTV.

Bye Bye e-mail installer. You’ll sort-of be missed 🙂

Installing HENkaku Ensō will probably require you to install a VPK  that installs the installer itself. The installer will probably guide you itself so it shouldn’t be too hard for you to install. Simply make sure the VPK is from a trusted source and that it’s the PROPER version not an older version if you get it from another website since older versions were much more unstable and could even brick your console. The build date should be somewhere around July 29th 2017 (maybe July 28th).

The release time will probably be based on PDT so if you’re in Europe, it’ll land in the morning of July 30th; if you’re further East, it’ll land towards midday of July 30th. If you’re concerned about HENkaku Ensō damaging your system, wait a little while (a few hours) before installing it to see if any problems crop up for other users.

What HENkaku Ensō is not?

Many PSVita community members have asked various questions about HENkaku Ensō so these are the answers to some so that nobody asks any silly questions when the software lands.

  • HENkaku Ensō ONLY works on PSVita firmware 3.60. It doesn’t work with firmware 3.61 or higher; if you have an older firmware, update to firmware 3.60 via various different methods.
  • It will not let you play games meant for a higher firmware either!
  • You also won’t be able to play dumped games for higher firmware versions so forget about that.
  • PSN spoofing won’t be affected by HENkaku Ensō.
  • Unless someone creates something else, you won’t be able to run any other OS (like Android – which probably will never be ported to Vita as it’s not worthit) or a higher version of OFW on your PSVita with HENkaku Ensō installed.
  • HENkaku Ensō will probably not be bug-free from the get go so wait some time if you’re really scared about losing even a bit of data
  • HENkaku Ensō won’t give your PSVita superpowers!

Conclusion

That is it! Now, all you have to do is wait a little while for HENkaku Ensō to launch and pray that there aren’t any major issues. You can also follow Yifan Lu on Twitter to get the latest updates.

Developer ‘rsn8887’ of Github decided to update some of Cpasjuste’s work in order to give a better experience to Vita users. This time around, PFBA for the Vita got updated to version 1.10 and UAE4ALL2 got updated 1.52.

What’s PFBA and what got updated?

PFBA (Portable Final Burn Alpha) is a version of FBA which is an arcade system emulator that emulates Neo Geo, Capcom and Konami arcade machines amongst others. The interface for PFBA is pretty easy to navigate and it also has an ARM assembly core for emulating 68k machines for better performance. It can also act as a nice alternative to some RetroArch cores since this emulator has great and simple-to-use UI.

PFBA in action

This is what’s included in release 1.10 of PFBA:

  • Flickering borders are fixed if the FIT option is disabled.

What’s UAE4ALL2 and what got updated?

UAE4ALL2 is an emulator for Amiga 500/1200 machines. This emulator has various PSVita specific features, such as multiple hard-file support (up to 4 simultaneously), analogue mouse control and custom autofire mapping with an adjustable fire rate. To use this emulator, you obviously need the Kickstart ROMs you want to use and the images for the games you wish to run. Performance may vary depending on the game you wish to play.

This is what’s included in release 1.52:

  • Joystick diagonal control and deadzone are improved when controlling the Amiga’s joystick with the Vita’s analogue stick. The joystick’s analogue to digital conversion is now done in a more sophisticated way which includes eight symmetric angular zones which cover all possible directions for more precise control.

Conclusion

In order to get these emulators on your system, just follow the links below and download the VPK. After downloading the VPKs, just copy over your games to the proper paths (and Kickstart BIOS ROM in the case of UAE4ALL2) and play away!

Mod released to let you use Adrenaline with uma0: for the PSVita/PSTV

$
0
0

Adrenaline is one of the most popular hacks that’s available for the PSVita so obviously someone would decide to add some extra feature. This time around, PSX-Place user and developer “BenMitnicK” added uma0 support to Adrenaline.

What does uma0 support mean?

uma0 support in Adrenaline, the popular ePSP hack for HENkaku systems, could be useful in various situations such as:

  • If you have your SD2Vita mounted as uma0, you can use your microSD card for PSP stuff and your Vita memory card for Vita stuff. Obviously, this can also work the other way round (SD2Vita mounted as ux0 and Vita memory card mounted as uma0).
  • It’s also useful if you have a PSTV with which you use a pendrive/external HDD since you could use the Vita memory card for something useful if you have that mounted as uma0.

The main advantage of this mod is that you’ll be able to use that extra storage that you got either via SD2Vita or a pendrive/external hard drive.

I have personally tried a PSX game (Klonoa: Door to Phantomile) and a PSP homebrew called Basilisk II; both of which work just fine on my microSD card which is mounted as uma0. I’ve not noticed any difference in loading times either.

How do I install it then?

To install it, you must do the following:

  1. Download the “Adrenaline-EN.zip” file from the link below.
  2. Extract it on your computer/mobile device.
  3. Copy the files of the archive over to ux0:/adrenaline (or where you told taiHEN to look for the adrenaline skprx/suprx files in config.txt). Backup the files that you are replacing. (The files are adrenaline.skprx, adrenaline.suprx and usbdevice.skprx)
  4. Reboot your device for the changes to take effect (it may work if you reload config.txt via MolecularShell but I recommend a reboot to avoid any conflicts).
  5. Change the memory stick location to “uma0:pspemu” in Adrenaline’s menu. Switching the memory stick location happens immediately so that means that you don’t need to re-open Adrenaline.

    uma0 support in Adrenaline

    Changing memory stick location

  6. You’re done! You can now remove some files from ux0:pspemu to save space. DON’T DELETE YOUR BASE GAME AND I’D SUGGEST YOU LEAVE THE REST OF THE FILES INTACT. JUST REMOVE YOUR GAMES/HOMEBREW FROM UX0 SO THAT YOU COULD EASILY USE ADRENALINE AGAIN FROM UX0 IF YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE STORAGE MEDIUM YOU USE AS UMA0.

Conclusion

This modification is possible because the source code of Adrenaline is open-source and “BenMitnicK” compiled it with his added feature (uma0 support). Please don’t report any bugs regarding this modded version of Adrenaline to “TheFlow” before comparing your findings with the official version of Adrenaline released by him.

PSV VSH Menu – Initial Release [taiHEN]

$

This is another addition to the list of taiHEN plugins, and this one aims to bring back the nostalgia from the good old PSP era.

As its name states, the PSV VSH Menu, is a VSH menu for the PS VITA/VITA TV. The VSH Menu was a custom menu running on PSP CFW’s that allowed you to do things like overclocking/underclocking, changing ISO drivers, booting into recovery etc. all under one menu.

Currently the PSV version doesn’t offer anything new apart from features that are already available in other plugins, comprised into one single handly plugin.

Booting into the custom recovery menu requires you to have the vsh_recovery installed, and you must quit the game/application to enter that menu.

PSV VSH Menu running under VITAident

Features:

  • Control CPU/GPU clock separately.
  • Reboot/Shutdown/Suspend device in game.
  • Reload tai config.
  • Back up PSN activation files.
  • Rebuild/Update database.
  • Swap enter button (X / O)

Instructions:

  1. Download and install the vsh_recovery.vpk if you want to use the recovery functions.
  2. Place vsh.suprx in the ux0:/tai folder.
  3. In your config.txt add:

If you want this running under all titles:

*ALL
ux0:tai/vsh.suprx

Or if you want this running under a specific title:

# titleid for your application
*VID000162
ux0:tai/vsh.suprx

This is the plugin’s first release, so there is room for lots of improvement. If you do find any issues feel free to discuss in our /talk’s thread, or you can directly submit them to my GitHub’s issue tracker.

Crazy Traffic Jam 3D homebrew game released for the PSVita

$

When one thinks of homebrew, emulators and game ports usually spring to mind. While those make up a great amount of popular homebrew, there are also original homebrew games developed from the base up for the device. This time around, team VitaHEX decided to develop Crazy Traffic Jam 3D for us to enjoy.

What’s Crazy Traffic Jam 3D?

The game’s a pretty simple game in which you avoid cars in ongoing traffic with your d-pad. You can collect coins, that increase your score, and lightning boosts that speed up your car (and make it invincible, it’s probably a bug, eh?).

The game has a top-down perspective and its graphics are 2.5D-esque which are quite decent considering 3D capability in regards to Vita homebrew.

In terms of completeness, I would say that there’s a tad more to be desired however. I would really like to see some way to increase difficulty (maybe it could do it automatically by increasing your speed as your score increases) and possibly some different backdrops. Some better music also wouldn’t hurt.

In-game screenshot. You play as the red car.

As a game that you play for a few minutes at a time, I would say it’s pretty decent if more development is done on it; I would say that it would become a game comparable to Android/iOS favourites like Crossy Road that you play for a few minutes at a go.

On the technical side, Crazy Traffic Jam 3D is using Rinnegatamante’s Lua Player Plus which demonstrates that LPP can in fact be used for homebrew games with 3D graphics!

Conclusion

To get this homebrew, you just need to install either it via VHBB (which gets it from VitaDB) or by installing the VPK from the link below. I personally think that this game really shows off how well an indie developer could create a game that feels like a high-end game if more work is put into it. Hopefully, more work will be put into this homebrew game because I believe it has potential!

Should you have any issues, report them on the thread below to VitaHEX or “Sakis Rg” who did the programming and art.

Wololo /talk thread (+ download link): http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?f=116&t=48358

N.B: I have included my opinion in the writing of this article in order to show the different aspects of the homebrew game at hand.

FakeCamera plugin for the PSTV released – Simulate camera answers on your PSTV

$

0

As most of you already know, the PSTV doesn’t have a camera and you can’t add one via USB or some type of sorcery. That means that some blacklisted games (i.e ones not allowed to run on a PSTV for various, sometimes stupid, reasons) could crash if they need access to the camera for some reason. FakeCamera could be the answer to your crashing game!

What’s FakeCamera?

FakeCamera is a plugin developed by “OperationNT” that simulates SceCamera API answers. This plugin exists in order to pass expected camera-related answers to the game which could result in avoiding some crashes.

As with almost all taiHEN plugins, your game must be DUMPED for this to work. That means that you need to dump your game with Vitamin or MaiDumpTool. Now that storage is plentiful on both the PSTV and the Vita (thanks to USB storage and SD2Vita respectively), it shouldn’t really be a problem.

Tearaway – Now on PSTV, kind of (the camera isn’t the only problem hence the kind of)

Currently, the following games were tested (it may work with other games):

  • Wipeout 2048 (PCSF00007) – The game doesn’t crash when starting a multiplayer session since the crash was caused by the picture feature (which is somewhat useless).
  • Tearaway (PCSF00214) – Now, it won’t crash but you still can’t do some interactions that it asks you to do such as shaking the Vita. (no, shaking your PSTV won’t work)

How do I install it?

To install it, you need to do the following:

  • Download the plugin from the link below.
  • Add the title ID of the game you wish to use with the plugin in taiHEN’s ‘config.txt’. (*TITLEID???? – replace the question marks with the number of the game) The asterisk is important as it creates a new section in the ‘config.txt’ file.
  • Add “ux0:tai/fakecamera.suprx” (or where you stored the plugin) in the section you just created for your game.
  • Reload taiHEN’s config.txt and cross your fingers that the issue is fixed!

As always, download the plugin is from a reputable source to avoid any issues/trojans. Should you have any issues, report them to Wololo /talk user “OperationNT” (nice username!).

Pro Camera Vita released – Make your camera much more useful

$
0
0

The number of homebrew for the PSVita has been on the rise for quite a while but this homebrew is quite special. Pro Camera Vita is one of the first (if not the first) homebrew applications for the PSVita that makes use of the camera!

What’s Pro Camera Vita?

Pro Camera Vita is an application that makes the camera on your PSVita much more useful thanks to various features. The official Sony camera app is lacking at best since it doesn’t include much in terms of features except an aspect ratio changer.

Pro Camera Vita includes the following features:

  • Ability to display a Grid on your Vita’s screen.
  • Brightness and Contrast sliders.
  • Various white balance settings.
  • An aspect ratio slider (4:3 and 16:9 I think).
  • A night mode.
  • Different picture frames/borders.
  • Button to choose between the front-facing and back-facing camera.
  • Picture filters, namely Negative, Black and White, Sepia, Blue, Red and Green.
  • A gallery to view your pictures with directions on how to ‘import’ your pictures. ‘Imported’ pictures by the application’s directions will be in the “Pro Camera Vita” section in the “Screenshot” section in your gallery. You can copy the pictures to your computer/mobile device via FTP.

As you can see, this application provides a LOT of features over the stock camera application so I personally recommend that you start using this homebrew camera application over the stock one.

Pro Camera Vita in action! Yes, picture quality isn’t spectacular partly due to bad lighting conditions.

Hopefully in a future release, a video function will be added and the controls will change their direction when you hold your Vita in portrait mode.

Like Crazy Traffic Jam 3D, this homebrew also uses Lua Player Plus (by Rinnegatamante) as its Lua interpreter which shows how powerful LPP is.

Conclusion

While this is a great camera application, don’t expect that your PSVita’s camera will start taking spectacular pictures; remember, the PSVita’s cameras (both front and back-facing) are of VGA quality (0.3MP) and they can only take video at 60 fps @ 640×480 or at 120fps @ 320×240. That being said, the application gets you the most you can get out of the camera and it’s certainly going to replace the stock camera app as my default camera app.

To get this homebrew, you can download it straight off Vita Homebrew Browser on your Vita or you can get the VPK and install that on your PSVita. If you have any issues, report them to VitaHEX Games (user “big_Sakis25”) on Wololo /talk forums or Twitter!

MLTActivator: activate your PS Vita offline

$
0
0

This release will probably please a huge number of PS Vita 3.60 users: MLTActivator, released by developers Miralatijera and Draqen on popular Spanish scene site daxhordes, lets you activate your PS Vita offline. Since its release earlier today, it’s been confirmed to work on both the PS Vita and PS TV.

What is MLTActivator?

Roughly around the time of the release of Henkaku Ensou, Sony made a drastic change to the activation process of the PS Vita. as a result of this change, people not running the latest firmware have been unable to activate their PS Vita. This triggered warnings from hackers that people should back up their activation files as soon as possible, to avoid any bad surprise. However, some people discovered the problem the hard way, and ended up with their Vita not activated.

For owners of hacked PS Vita, this meant, among other issues, that Adrenaline (the popular tool that lest you run a PSP Custom Firmware within your PS Vita) could not run properly.

Although TheFlow has promised an upcoming version of Adrenaline will work without activation, this has left several users looking for a new solution in the meantime.

That solution, as of today, is MLTActivator, which people have confirmed lets them activate their PS Vita offline, and run Adrenaline.

In particular, developer Joonie86, of Rebug fame, has confirmed that MLTActivator worked.

What are the risks of MLTActivator?

There are several risks to using MLTActivator. The main one, that the authors have made very clear in their release, is that you should not access any official PS Vita service (such as the PSN) once it is activated. They say this will guarantee you get a ban from Sony.

MLTActivator works by swapping your account files with those of an activated account. This means that some of your apps, etc… will not work anymore, as they are associated to another account. The same is true for your QCMA linked account. Also the developers mention that the app might have to format your memory card in some rare cases. Because of this it is only recommended for people who have a console that is not activated, and cannot wait for the upcoming Adrenaline release.

Another risk is that the code is not open source at the moment. As we’ve seen a few times in the history of homebrew, any app that manipulates and reads your account information could be bad news, so use at your own risk here. I have not personally tested the app (my PS Vita’s sitting in some warehouse in a harbor at the moment).

MLTActivator FAQ

A short FAQ given what’s known of the tool so far.

Does it work on PSTV? Yes, this works on both PS Vita and PS TV, multiple people have confirmed this.

How to verify that my PS Vita is indeed activated? You can use System Check Enabled

Can I uninstall it? The app allegedly does a backup of your activation files so that you can switch accounts back with homebrews such as Account Switcher. It will not hurt for you to backup your files ahead of launching MLTActivator, though.

Download MLTActivator

Please use this app at your own risk. Check the “risks” section above.

You can download MLTActivator here.  A mirror can be found here. /Talk user TechThomas has uploaded an English translated version here.

Adrenaline Easy Installer Black Edition released (and some other releases) for the PSVita

$

Adrenaline is a very popular ePSP hack for the Vita so obviously, some people would have different takes on how they want to theme their LiveArea bubble. Wololo /talk user “dmaskell92” decided to released a mod to Adrenaline Easy Installer (by ‘Freakler’) so that you could install his Adrenaline theme rather than the standard one that ships with Adrenaline Easy Installer.

What’s Adrenaline Easy Installer Black Edition?

This hombrew utility mod is a take on Adrenaline Easy Installer that adds a bit of dark style. The following is a list of what’s been added/changed:

  • Adrenaline Easy Installer Black Edition installs the version of Adrenaline-5.1 (with the latest source code which fixes some bugs) with uma0: support that was covered in a previous article. This lets you use your USB pen drive/external HDD, Vita memory card or SD2Vita as your storage medium for PSP files depending on what you’ve mounted uma0 as. Apparently, the files for adrenaline-5.1 have been replaced with the modded version with uma0 support so you can’t install the official version of adrenaline-5.1. The changelog wasn’t updated either…

    Adrenaline Easy Installer Black-Edition

  • A different LiveArea theme replaces the official purple(ish) theme for the Adrenaline bubble. The installer itself also got a black edition theme.
  • Param.SFO was edited so Adrenaline Easy Installer Black Edition doesn’t replace the official version of the installer. This mod is based off version 1.15 of Adrenaline Easy Installer.

The main attraction of this mod is the different theme and the modded version of Adrenaline. I would recommend you give this modded installer a go to see if you like the theme better and get uma0 support if you haven’t installed the modded version already!

FTPzilla Vita and Plugins Manager Beta released

FTPzilla Vita is an FTP client for the Vita written in ONElua. You may access FTP servers with it and it has various features that you can read more about below. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get it working (I tried different FTP servers on different devices) but you might have better results; if so, please post them in the comments section! This homebrew is by DavisDev of GitHub.

Plugins Manager Beta is homebrew utility that you could use to enable/disable plugins and delete them. It didn’t read my plugins under the *KERNEL section for some reason; and it also doesn’t let you choose whether you want to edit the configuration file in ur0 or ux0. This homebrew is by kylon of HackInformer forums.

Conclusion

To get Adrenaline Easy Installer Black Edition, simply follow the links below. It’s an unsafe homebrew so get it from a safe source. You’ll also need to change the file extension to .VPK from .ZIP to be able to install it on your Vita. You may get the other homebrew from the links below as well.

RetroArch is a great front-end for the emulation of many retro systems and libretro strives to keep on rolling updates to make the experience even better. This time around, RetroArch 1.6.6 got released which gives mobile users a much better UI.

What’s RetroArch?

RetroArch is a front-end for many emulators; this means that with one piece of software you can play and manage all your emulated games. Thanks to different RetroArch cores (which you have to download manually), you can emulate many systems such as:

  • Various Nintendo consoles like the NES, SNES and Gameboy
  • The PSX
  • Various Sega consoles like the Genesis, Saturn and Game Gear
  • Some computers (old Amiga computers) and game ports (Doom with the PrBoom port)
  • Many other systems (including Arcade machines)

Obviously, you need to provide your own ROMs since RetroArch only provides the emulation software and a nice frontend to manage your games. Some systems, such as the GBA and Amiga computers, may require a BIOS or some other special files to be able to function at all.

RetroArch on Windows 98. A port for your fridge/toaster may come up next!

RetroArch is available on various devices and operating systems such as:

  • PCs running Windows 98 SE to Windows 10 (different versions have to be used since they’re compiled in a different way)
  • Macintosh computers, even PowerPC ones on OS X 10.5
  • Android (2.3+) and iOS
  • The PS3, PSP, PSVita, XBox, Wii, GameCube and others

What’s changed in RetroArch 1.6.6?

RetroArch 1.6.6 brings along the following changes/additions:

  • On mobile devices (i.e iOS and Android devices), RetroArch now uses MaterialUI, the

New RetroArch UI on iOS 6.1.6 on an iPod Touch 4

new UI for mobile devices. This one is easier to navigate and has a clean and modern look to it.

  •  Onscreen overlays now show button presses even when you press the buttons via a gamepad/keyboard.
  • A regression fix for the Nintendo 3DS has been included. This fixes the forcibly enabled rewind function on all cores of the 3DS port.
  • The Italian translation got updated.
  • Various other bugfixes.

Conclusion

To update your version of RetroArch, just go to the RetroArch website and follow the instructions. Various instructions are available for different devices so make sure to follow the instructions for your specific device.

DSMotion released – Motion controls for your PSTV with your DS3/DS4

$
0
0

For some reason, Sony didn’t want PSTV owners to play all Vita games they owned so they didn’t bother doing workarounds for certain PSVita-only features (camera, gyroscope, accelerometer etc). Thanks to DSMotion, you can now use your DS3/DS4 to play games that require some degree of motion control such as shaking.

What’s DSMotion?

DSMotion is a plugin by “OperationNT” that enables the PSTV to read gyroscope/accelerometer values from the DS3/DS4. Thanks to this plugin, you can play Vita games (or at least have more functionality in them) that require gyroscope/accelerometer functions such as shaking the Vita and so on.

The plugin has the following limitations that you must take into consideration before reporting any issues:

  • It only works with DUMPED games. This doesn’t mean you have to be a pirate, you can just dump your games via MaiDump Tool.
  • DS3 controllers must not be used via USB for this plugin to work. Therefore, you should use DS3 controllers via Bluetooth and use a USB charger if you need to charge up your controller.
  • You should also read the readme file on GitHub which is linked below to avoid reporting any known problems.
  • Make sure your DS3/DS4 are original and not counterfeit before reporting any issues regarding this plugin. Some fake DS3/DS4s may connect properly when used wirelessly but they might not have an acceleromter/gyroscope.

The creator of the plugin has tested Tearaway (PCSF00214) with the plugin and parts that require shaking the Vita now work by shaking the controller.

Tearaway – Now more playable thanks to DSMotion and FakeCamera

Installation and Conclusion

To install the plugin, you must do the following:

  • Download both the skprx and suprx plugins from the link below. SKPRX stands for kernel plugins and SUPRX stands for userland plugins.
  • Add “ux0:tai/dsmotion.skprx” (or wherever you put the file) to the *KERNEL section of taiHEN’s config.txt
  • Add “ux0:tai/dsmotion.suprx” (or wherever you put the file) to the *????? section of taiHEN’s config.txt. ????? stands for the TitleID of your PSVita game, look for it in ux0:app.
  • Reboot your PSTV and enjoy!

If you have any issues, contact “OperationNT” (a.k.a the guy that’s seemingly trying to make all Vita games playable on the PSTV since he also released FakeCamera for the PSTV)  on Wololo /talk forums or on GitHub.

CSPSP 1.92+ updated to R8 (Adrenaline supported for online play) and Camera Patch Lite updated

$
0
0

CSPSP is quite a unique homebrew since it’s one of the few homebrew out there that has multiplayer functionality. Originally developed by Kevin Chen, /wololo talk user “UnLuck3R” took matters into his own hands and updated the homebrew many times to give a better experience.

What CSPSP is and what got updated

CSPSP is a top-down view shooting game for the PSVita. As the name suggests, it drew inspiration from Counter Strike and this is evident in both the weapons and the maps. While CSPSP is preferably played with other people online, you could also play it alone since it has a single player mode included in which you play against bots generated by the device. Thanks to the fact that

In-game screenshot of single player mode

you can remap the L/R trigger to the right analogue stick makes playing the game much easier on the PSVita.

CSPSP 1.92+ revision 8 brings about the following changes:

  • Adrenaline users can now play CSPSP online. That being said, PSP users are advised to hold onto r7.1 since r8 has a bug which forces you to log in every time you play online.

To play, simply download the game from the link below, put it onto your Vita via FTP/USB, log in (you can make a new account in the game itself) and play away!

Hopefully, the community of this game will grow to a sizeable number (even if it’s just a few dozen players) since the game holds quite a lot of potential especially on the PSVita thanks to the right analogue stick!

What Camera Patch Lite is and what got updated

Camera Patch Lite is a plugin by ‘Freakler’ that adds right analogue stick support (usually for aiming/looking) to a whole variety of games instead of just one game. This plugin is meant to make PSP games more enjoyable for PSVita users since having a right analogue stick for certain controls makes life much easier in some games.

Camera Patch Lite version 1.1 brings about the following:

  • Some games were added to the list of supported games.
  • Settings are no longer hardcoded since you can now edit the ‘camera_patch_lite.ini’ file yourself.
  • The games that ‘TheFlow’ already made a native patch for aren’t allowed to use Camera Patch Lite by default. You should use ‘TheFlow”s native patches for them. The native patch he released is called GTA Remastered Controls Patch, about which you can read from the link below.

    Camera Patch Light

Camera Patch Light lets you use both analogue sticks for PSP games on a variety of games!

It is worth noting that you could also assign certain button combinations to the right analogue stick with the official PSVita settings. If you have any issues regarding this plugin, contact ‘Freakler’ on Twitter or GitHub.
