OpenTTD ported to the PSVita – Play the popular open-source transport management game on the go

As some of you might know, the PSVita is becoming the go-to console if you’re a fan of open-source games. It has ports of games like GNU Robbo, OpenTyrian, some fan-made Zelda games and a wealth of PSP open-source titles like SuperTux which scale pretty well. Now, OpenTTD has been added to the collection thanks to ‘angguss’ on GitHub.

What’s OpenTTD?

OpenTTD is an open-source business simulation game in which you act as an entrepreneur that manages a transport company that has to do with air, water, railroad and road transport. The game is based off and takes many elements from the popular 1995 game called Transport Tycoon Deluxe, now you probably understand the abbreviation if you hadn’t heard of OpenTTD before 😉The PSVita port seems to be based on version 1.7.1 (latest version as of yet) and has the following features:

  • Touchscreen can be used for mouse input, the d-pad for panning the camera, circle for right clicking and the shoulder buttons for zooming.
  • Multithreading, autosaving and LZO are supported in this port.
  • For performance reasons (remember, this game can get pretty choatic) it runs @ 480×272 (the PSP’s resolution) but it can be made to run at a higher resolution if you don’t mind a performance hit.

Sadly, sound and network support are not yet implemented but hopefully, they’ll be implemented soon enough!

OpenTTD in action!

How do I get it?

To get it, you can either install the VPK which you can get from the link below or download it via VHBB. That being said, you still need to copy the data files yourself or else you’ll just get a blank screen when opening the game.

You can get the data files by installing the game onto a PC and then copying over the files needed to ux0:/data/openttd. The developer plans to make a content downloader that works via the internet in the future so you wouldn’t have to install it on another device to get the data files.

If you have any issues, report them to ‘angguss’ on GitHub.

DSMotion for the PSTV updated to version 1.2 – Bug Fixes, accuracy improvements and updated compatibility list

$

0

DSMotion for the PSTV got quite a good response since a decent amount of people on both Reddit and Wololo have taken interest in it and tested some games. The developer, OperationNT, has now come up with more fixes to make this plugin even better to shorten the list of Vita games incompatible with the PSTV due to hardware limitations!

What’s DSMotion and what got updated?

DSMotion is a plugin developed by “OperationNT” of Wololo /talk forums that allows the PSTV to read motion readings (gyro/accelerometer) from your Dualshock 3/4. This plugin is meant to make games that require motion control playable and/or fully functional on the PSTV since it corrects Sony’s ‘oversight’ of not creating a driver for the PSTV to read motion data from the DS3/4.

Currently, these games have been tested:

  • WipeOut 2048 – Motion commands option can now be used.
  • Welcome Park – The skate board game can now be played.
  • Tearaway – You can get past the introduction section in which it asks you to shake your PS Vita.
  • Flower –  The game is now playable.
  • Uncharted Golden Abyss – River game at chapter 12 and some other balance mini-games can now be completed thanks to the plugin.
  • Gravity Rush – No gravity mode got some functionality.
  • Virtua Tennis 4 – Match VR mode got some functionality
  • Rayman Legends – Murfy may now perform actions that require motion control.

You can now play the balance mini-games of Uncharted Golden Abyss thanks to this plugin!

Version 1.1 and 1.2 brought along the following:

  • A useless hook on “sceMotionGetBasicOrientation” was removed to reduce unnecessary code. (version 1.1)
  • Some vertical inversion issues were fixed. (version 1.1)
  • Some improvements on the DS3/DS4 orientation computations were introduced for more accurate movement. (version 1.2)
  • Some more limitations were discovered.

As you can see, there’s quite a large list of games that are compatible with this plugin so you should certainly grab it if you plan to try out any of these games!

Make sure you consult the limitations section linked to at the bottom of this article before you use this plugin so that you know what to expect! It also seems that the plugin works on official games so you needn’t dump your games.

How do I install it?

Installation is pretty straightforward if you follow these steps:

  1. Copy dsmotion.skprx and dsmotion.suprx to your PSVita
  2. Open your taiHEN config.txt file
    1. Add your “.skprx” plugin to the *KERNEL section of the file
    2. Add your “.suprx” plugin to the *????? section of the file (????? denotes the TITLEID of the game/homebrew you want to use it with – PCSF00007 is the TITLEID for WipeOut 2048 for example)
  3. Reload your taiHEN config.txt file via Molecular Shell although I would recommend a reboot to be on the safe side.
  4. Enjoy!

Should you have any issues, report them to “OperationNT” on Wololo /talk forums or GitHub. You should also test any other games that need motion control to broaden the compatibility list.

Developer MiraLaTijera recently released MLTHaku, a tool designed to install the basics for a newly hacked PS Vita. The tool makes the following things easier:

  • Installs the gamesd plugin to support SD2Vita permanently
  • Replaces Molecular Shell with VitaShell, installs Vita Homebrew Browser as well as the Henkaku Ensou installer
  • Using your PS vita no longer requires an official memory card (Note from wololo: instead, the SD card should be all you need)

How to install and use MLTHaku

(loosely translated from the original page. Please use this tool at your own risk)

Requirements

Instructions

  • (Skip this step if you’ve already installed SD2Vita) Insert your Micro SD in your PC and extract the files of SDFiles.zip to it.
  • (Skip this step if you don’t already have Henkaku or Henkaku Enso). With Henkaku or Ensou running, using either VitaShell or MolecularShell, go to ur0: and delete the “Tai” folder. Then turn the console off.
  • With your console turned off, remove the official PS Vita memory card, and insert your SD2Vita and MicroSD card.
  • turn the console on, then in the PS Vita browser go to “http://mlthaku.tk“. [Disclaimer from wololo.net: use this url at your own risk. Although the whole scene can easily vouch for the official Henkaku url, this one is not i. Source code for this has not been released]
  • Once the process is complete, you should have the Henkaku Enso installer, that you can run (if you already had Henkaku Enso, install it again)
  • Once the vita is restarted, SD2Vita will be mounted permanently.

3DS: RPwnG exploit patched by Nintendo, source code released

Yesterday, Nintendo patched an exploit in game RPG Maker Player. The exploit had been publicly released by 3DS hacker MrNbaYoh last week, and allowed 3DS users on the latest firmware to run the popular Homebrew Launcher tool.

The exploit required people to either download a vulnerable DLC, or to share some specifically crafted maps online in the game. The hacking community had organized around twitter hashtag #GetRPwnG in order to share maps that triggered the exploit. Because these techniques required to go through the game’s online server, it has probably been reasonably easy for the game developers to patch.

As of a few hours ago, the 3DS hacking community reports that RPG Make maps containing the hack are instantly removed when they get uploaded, which probably implies a system has been put in place server side to block the exploit’s signature.

What this means is that if you were lucky enough to download the exploit in time, you can still use it, but users who learned about this too late will not be able to enjoy homebrew as they cannot download the exploit anymore.

Since the exploit had been patched, MrNbaYoh has published the source for it (link below). It is not impossible, but unlikely, that someone could rework the exploit in a way that does not trigger the prevention mechanism on the server side. Or maybe someone will figure out a way involving some network proxy to download the files from an unofficial server…

App Manager Plus version 3 released – Easily move apps between ux0/ur0/uma0

With the advent of new storage solutions for the PSVita/PSTV such as SD2Vita (or Yifan Lu’s miniPCIe to microSD adapter) and external USB storage, a utility to move games/homebrew to different paritions is something that the Vita needed. Thanks to team ONElua, an application manager for managing applications on different paritions has been released!

What’s App Manager Plus?

App Manager Plus is a multi-purpose homebrew utility which does a whole array of operations, such as:

  • Let you move your homebrew/games to different paritions. You can transfer them to ur0 (internal storage),ux0(Vita memory card by default) and uma0(USB storage, SD2Vita or Vita memory card depending on your setup). Ur0 can also be used on the PSVita FAT even though Sony doesn’t let you use the 2.5GB of internal storage. Some people have voiced concern over using ur0 for application/homebrew storage on the PSVita FAT since Sony didn’t intend for it to be used that way but I had no issues with it during my testing.
  • A file manager that bundles a picture viewer and music player.
  • FTP server functionality within the file manager.
  • A custom theme installer.

App Manager Plus version 3 in action!

  • Many other features.

As you can see, this homebrew is sort of a Swiss army knife for the Vita so I personally recommend you try it out since something ought to appeal to you.

What’s changed/been updated in App Manager Plus version 3?

The following has been changed in version 3:

  • You can move games/apps to and fro from/to ur0/ux0/uma0. Read the note below about moving games.
  • Video export functionality got added
  • Restart, turn off and re-open App Manager Plus options got added to the options section of the file manager
  • Some changes to where options are found were made
  • Lots of bug fixes
  • The updater got fixed (version 3.0.1)

Conclusion

To install this utility, simply get the VPK from the link below and install it via VitaShell after copying the file to your Vita via USB/FTP. This homebrew isn’t available on VHBB (VitaDB) so make sure you get it from a safe link such as the one below since it needs unsafe permissions to work.

App Manager Plus 3.0.1 download link: https://github.com/ONElua/AppManager-Plus/releases/tag/3.01

More information on it: https://github.com/ONElua/AppManager-Plus

I have tested out the utility by moving GNU Robbo (a homebrew game port) to both uma0 and ur0 on a PSVita Fat. I have also moved Age of Zombies, an official PSVita game to uma0/ur0 and it worked but the save data got lost; however, after moving it back to ux0, the save data reappeared. Importing and exporting save data via Vita Save Manager didn’t work either. Hopefully the issue gets fixed as it’s a bit of a deal breaker in my opinion :/

What’s next for the PS Vita scene?

$
0
0

With the recent release of Henkaku Ensou as well as SD2Vita, to of the major “sky’s the limit” dreams of the Vita scene have been achieved: a permanent CFW and MicroSD cards support.

We could accept what we have and feel pretty content about it, but come on, we’re the scene, on the day after Christmas we start thinking about the present we’re going to get next year. So in this great spirit of “give me more!”, here’s a collection of what’s still missing in the PS Vita scene:

PS Vita Video out

Yes, The mysterious “video out” port has been debunked multiple times. However, the PSP had some console-to-pc support via remotejoy and the usb port. Surely something similar can be achieved ultimately on the PS Vita?

This would be super convenient for all the youtubers out there who want to go through a few gameplay sessions, or simply  for the fun of scaling it up to a big screen? I know, I know, your PS TV works great for exactly that, but still.

Better custom themes

Customizing themes on the PS Vita still feels it’s in its early stages. Sure, RedSquirrel’s Custom Themes manager does a terrific job, but it’s the underlying possibilities that need to be dramatically improved. Remember the countless possibilities we had with CXMB on the PSP?

A kodi-like media player

Each console has had its own great homebrew media player. The PSP had Pimpstreamer, the PS3 has Showtime. Heck, Kodi started as XBMC. The “X” in there stands for Xbox!

So, all generations of consoles have had their homebrew media player. Let’s be honest for a minute here, the default media player on the Vita is terrible. The console is in desperate need of something much better.

A full fledged N64 emulator

Emulating the N64 has been the scene’s pet peeve for a while. The folks at retroarch announced a while ago that they started working on an N64 emulator for PS Vita, but progress has stalled.

Today the only way to play N64 games on the Vita is still PSP’s own DaedalusX64, which is a bit sad.

A PS Vita emulator

Alright, this one is the weird one of the list. Not an actual thing for the vita scene directly, but with the console full blown open for more than a year, I would have expected a multiplicity of projects starting to look into the console firmware and start implementing a ps vita emulator.

We can already dump and reverse most of the console’s modules. Am I missing something here?

More homebrew games!

Last but not least, we need more homebrew games. The Gekihen competition was a step in the right direction to get the ball rolling, but the Vita scene is still far from producing the same amount of experiments that the PSP was. Obviously, the world has evolved and it’s probably easier to get games created on a phone nowadays, but still, it would be fairly exciting to see people release more fun experiments, tiny games, ports, or even massive scale projects for the sake of it.

And if you’re a homebrew dev and are looking for ideas, we have literally 6 homebrew wishlists lying around! Here, here, here, here, here, and here!

Voice Recorder Vita released by VitaHEX! – Sleek and simple voice recorder for your Vita

$

While the Vita has its own fair share of cool homebrew, it is a tad lacking in ‘essential’ homebrew. By ‘essential’, I mean applications you find preloaded on your smartphone such as a notes application, voice recorder and so on which you may need to use for everyday life tasks. Thanks to VitaHEX, the Vita got Voice Recorder Vita added to its homebrew collection!

What’s Voice Recorder Vita?

Voice Recorder Vita is an application that’s similar to the ‘Voices memos’ application you could find on your iOS/Android smartphone. It offers the following features:

  • A clean dark UI with a few essential buttons such as record, stop and an option to list your recordings.
  • A recording manager that allows you to listen to your recordings and delete them. Recordings are created in the WAV format so they could be played back on virtually every device.

    The sleek voice recording UI

  • The recordings have a maximum length of 30 seconds but they can be cut off before by pressing the stop button. I’d say that 30 seconds is a tad too short, I would have preferred a 5 minute maximum so that you could more easily record yourself singing a whole song or reading some text.
  • Recordings are stored in ux0:/data/Recordings so they can be easily copied off the PSVita via USB/FTP.

Remember, the microphone (on the Vita Fat at least) is located below the warranty sticker which is found a little behind the charging port. The microphone’s quality won’t win any awards but it’s good enough to do some short recordings! This homebrew was

The recording manager and player.

written in LPP so special thanks go to Rinnegatamante.

Conclusion

To get this homebrew, you can download the VPK from the link below. It’s available on VitaDB but it crashes VHBB for me when I try to check it out so I opted to download it via my iPad (you may use another smartdevice or a computer) and transfer to my Vita via FTP. I personally recommend putting this homebrew onto your Vita as it’s an application that Sony should have included in the first place and it could prove useful if you’re out and about with only your Vita on hand!

PC Link for PSVita teased – Stream your computer’s display to your Vita even if you have Intel/AMD graphics!

$

The release of Moonlight in the early HENkaku days was very well received but that only let you stream your computer’s display if you had a supported Nvidia graphics card. With PC Link, you’ll be able to stream your computer’s display even if you have Intel integrated graphics or AMD graphics. You will still need a good router and internet connection as this is being done via Wi-Fi.

What’s PC Link?

This homebrew’s main function is to let you stream your computer’s display to your PSVita. It essentially does the same function of Moonlight but with PC Link, you can stream your computer’s display even if you don’t a Nvidia GameStream supported graphics card. Arkanite, the developer (or at least who posted the video below on YouTube) of this homebrew and others such as VitaPad++, decided to show off his LG-ultrabook streaming its display in the video below.

According to the description, the laptop sports Intel HD 4400 graphics which aren’t exactly stellar so that means that you’ll be able to use PC Link on a wide variety of systems. In the video, Arkanite demonstrates a YouTube video in HD quality being streamed to the PSVita and the quality is decent as per the description. There is no noticeable stutter and even Windows 10’s UI animations seem not to lag.

PC Link is a pretty exciting homebrew utility that will probably allow you to stream PC games to your Vita and control them with your Vita’s physical buttons. It also seems that you could use it for media consumption if that’s your thing and with an OSK (or a bluetooth keyboard/mouse for that matter), you could even use it to browse the web. You could even set up a cheap, headless and low-power computer (maybe with an RX550/GT 1030) for use solely with this homebrew.

Conclusion

As of right now, there are no compiled VPKs so you have to be patient for now. There’s no mention of user input via the Vita’s buttons being implemented either so it may be a while till you could actually stream and play PC games through this homebrew but patience is key here. All in all, I think it’s pretty cool and you may even be able to play PS3/Wii games via RPCS3/Dolphin with this homebrew.

Make sure not to ask for ETAs and let the man do his job!

Adrenaline-6 released – Base game/activation no longer needed!

$

Adrenaline, one of the most popular pieces of software for the PSVita/PSTV, got updated so that everybody could use it! Thanks to Adrenaline-6, you can now use Adrenaline (a.k.a the infamous ePSP hack for HENkaku-enabled Vitas/PSTVs) even if you haven’t activated your device (or have a basegame).

What’s Adrenaline?

This ePSP hack is one of the biggest reasons for which you should get a PSVita/PSTV running 3.60. It has the following features:

  • PSP ISO/CSO support so you can virtually play all dumped PSP games. You can dump your own legally-owned games!
  • PSX game support (via PSX2PSP) with sound support.
  • Support for PSP plugins, even CXMB works!
  • Ability to use ux0,ur0 and uma0 as the partition where your PSP files are located.
  • Full XMB so you could get the authentic PSP experience.
  • Homebrews that need 64MB of RAM (i.e ones that need a PSP Slim/2000+) are supported since unlike with other ePSP hacks, with Adrenaline, 64MB is allocated to the PSP emulator.
  • Now, you don’t even need activation or a base game to use it.
  • Many other features including save states and screen filters.

What got updated/changed in Adrenaline-6?

This is what got updated/changed in Adrenaline-6:

  • To use Adrenaline, you don’t need an activated PSTV/Vita and a base game! This means that you could use Adrenaline on virtually any PSVita/PSTV on FW 3.60.
  • Uma0 can now be used as the partition where your PSP files are located (Memory stick location becomes uma0:/pspemu). imc0: can now also be used.

Using uma0 as your memory stick location!

  • Support for longer ISO file names got added.
  • Some bugs were fixed and the core was updated.
  • You get a bubble for Adrenaline with a custom theme when you install it.
  • The installation process got changed and now you must install a VPK to install/update Adrenaline. The Network Update function doesn’t work when trying to update from Adrenaline-5.1 so you must install Adrenaline-6 manually. The 6.61 PBP gets downloaded from the new installer so you need to be connected to the internet to install Adrenaline-6.

There are two important release notes to read before installing:

  1. Add “ux0:app/PSPEMUCFW/sce_module/adrenaline_kernel.skprx” to the *KERNEL section of taiHEN’s config.txt and reboot your device. It’s recommended you do this since Adrenaline-6’s installer didn’t want to open after downloading the PSP firmware 6.61 file for me before adding this line. I also removed the line that pointed to adrenaline.skprx from the config.txt file to avoid any conflicts.
  2. If you had Adrenaline already installed, it is advised you remove or rename “ux0:adrenaline” to avoid any conflicts.
  3. (Extra) Save states from older versions can no longer be used so make sure you do a proper save before updating Adrenaline.

Conclusion

After reading the release notes above, you can download and install the VPK from the link below. If you have any issues report them to “TheFlow” on GitHub/Twitter in a civil manner.

Release: VITA2PC – Stream from your PSVITA to your PC

$

0

Remember 5 days ago when we complained the PS Vita had no “video out” functionality? Well, that was 5 days ago, so it’s old. Vita developer Rinnegatamante released VITA2PC yesterday, a tool that lets you do just that, and better than the existing Rincheat solution.

This first release is a bit experimental, and in particular sounds streaming seems to be a bit hit and miss. The developer says he will improve things with next releases.

What Vita2PC lets you do, and what it does not

Vita2PC is a plugin that will let you stream specific PS Vita games from your PS Vita to your PC Screen, through your local Wifi network. The plugin offers two modes, synchronous and asynchronous, which let you choose between accuracy (no frame drops) and speed (frame drops).

Vita2PC currently does not let you stream a full vita session (e.g. including the live area), but only once inside a game. Also, not all games are compatible at the moment, and in some cases the streaming quality might be choppy. The developer provides a compatibility list here.

What’s the difference between Vita2PC and the Rincheat stream option?

The main difference with the screen streaming option from Rincheat (also by Rinnegatamante) is that you also get audio, while Rincheat was only streaming the video content to your PC. But the Developer also shared the following details:

PC2Vita offers similar streaming functionality as Rincheat, but adds sound support

This plugin can be considered as a standalone improved version of rinCheat stream (infact the first prototype name was SA_ScreenStream (Standalone ScreenStream).

It has several improvements if compared to rinCheat:

  • A huge improvement in terms of how many games are supported. Basically rinCheat supported only a few portion of Vita games (45-50% probably). This plugin supports near the 95% of Vita games in theory.
  • Added Downscaler for games running at 960×544. Output will be at 480×272 (PSP resolution). This will drastically improve framerate, allowing even games without hardware acceleration to work fine.
  • Better hardware acceleration encoder code: now less VRAM is required to start an hw accelerated encoder. That means game that on rinCheat didn’t have hw acceleration could have this feature now. (Eg. Digimon CyberSleuth)
  • Added audio streaming support
  • Possibility to start synchronous video streaming with/without frameskip
  • Clocks are set at their maximum speed and won’t be lowerable from the app or other plugins. rinCheat didn’t have this feature.
  • Minor bugfixes and improvements (Eg. Now if you change the encoder quality during streaming, it will be really changed differently to rinCheat were you had to restart the game and the stream).

Download and run Vita2PC

5 great homebrew mini-games to play on your PSVita! – Including Spider Solitaire

$

0

The PSVita has quite a wide range of homebrew such as emulators and game ports but smaller games end up being forgotten. This article is here to bring to light the best mini-games you could put onto your PSVita to pass a bit of time!

1. SpiderVita

SpiderVita in action

Almost everybody has played Spider Solitaire sometime in their life so obviously, the Vita got a port of it too. It lets you change the difficulty by choosing whether you want to play with 1,2 or 4 suits and it uses the touchscreen for user input. This homebrew is by “leestorm” and is available on VitaDB so you can install it directly onto your Vita via VHBB!

2. Flood It!

Flood It! is a relatively simple game in which you have to fill a grid with the same colour. While it sounds simple, it is pretty challenging and it’s an excellent time

Flood It! on the PSVita

waster if you want to play something for a few minutes. Like SpiderVita, it was released in the early HENkaku days and it uses the touchscreen for input. This homebrew mini-game is also available on VitaDB too.

3. EUCLIOD

Eucliod is a game in which you control a space ship and defeat enemies on screen. It’s a relatively simple space shooter but it’s a great way to pass a few minutes and you can even change the difficulty and some other settings so it doesn’t get too repetitive.  This homebrew is written by HexZyle and was ported to the Vita by Rinnegatamante and can be found on VitaDB as well so you can directly install it onto your Vita.

4. Minesweeper

This game needs no introduction as everybody that’s ever used Windows has probably wasted some time on it. For input, this game uses the d-pad and it has three difficulty settings that you can toggle by pressing the SELECT button (small, medium and large grid). Minesweeper is by “LeeStorm” and is also available on VitaDB.

Minesweeper on the PSVita

5. Numpty Physics

Numpty Physics is a great time-waster for people that like physics-based puzzle games. In this game, you have to draw objects to finish physics puzzles or you can just mess about and destroy the scenery (which I admit is lots of fun!). This game is by “rock88” and was ported by Rinnegatamante (HENkaku port) and meetpatty (Rejuvenate port); you can find it on VitaDB.

Conclusion

Thanks to HENkaku Ensō, you can quickly start your PSVita in HENkaku-enabled mode and use it for a few minutes so these homebrew mini-games are an awesome way to pass some time. They are available on VitaDB so you can install them via Vita Homebrew Browser or you can get the VPKs from the links below.

You should really get VHBB if you haven’t yet as it allows you to download almost all homebrew available for HENkaku-enabled PSVita/PSTVs. 2048 didn’t make the list as it’s somewhat laggy but you can use the RetroArch core.

The PSVita has quite a few mini-games that you could play to pass some time and now, there’s another flavour of time-wasting games! Thanks to reddit user “Jakiepooh”, the PSVita now has a port of Hangman which was ported over from the 3DS.

What’s Vita Hangman?

Vita Hangman, as its name suggests, is a hangman game for the PSVita. After looking through the source code, it seems that this port is an improved version of Rinnegatamante’s 3DSHangman.

Inserting your own words

The UI is pretty sleek and the title screen can be controlled by either the touchscreen or the d-pad however in game only d-pad input is accepted. You may also press the circle button if you think you know the solution while some spaces are still empty.

Killing the hangman!

In the game, you have to guess the correct word before you do enough incorrect guesses to kill the hangman. If you want, you can also add words to its database. This game is written in Lua and is interpreted through Lua Player Plus (ported to the Vita by Rinnegatamante) so you can easily fiddle around with the code if you wish to change something. Overall, I would say that this game is a great way to waste a few minutes on the go.

How do I get it?

To get this homebrew game, you need to install the VPK from the link below and install it via VitaShell. If you had the first version of the VPK, you should install version 1.1 as the original version didn’t work but only returned an error upon opening it from LiveArea. Hopefully, this will be uploaded on VitaDB soon enough. If you find any bugs, you can report them to “JakiePooh” on the reddit thread below.

Another 5 great homebrew mini-games for the PSVita – Including StarKiller 2D

While the PSVita is a great console to spend hours playing games on, time isn’t always on our side. That being said, you can play quite a few homebrew mini-games on your PSVita and this article exposes some more great mini-games you could play on the go!

1. StarKiller 2D

This homebrew game is an original homebrew game that’s developed by ‘Freakler’

Playing StarKiller 2D!

(the guy who did Adrenaline Easy Installer). In this game, you need to pass through all the stars to get to the exit BUT you can’t step on a star twice so you have to be very careful not to lock yourself in and make the level unplayable. To control the game, you have to use the d-pad and some of the face buttons; the UI is pretty neat and it explains exactly what each button does while in-game. It has 54 levels so you ought to stay entertained for a while and there’s even a level editor if that’s not enough!

2. Hendoku

As the name suggests, this is a Sudoku game for the PSVita and a great one at that since it has a clean UI and a great control scheme. It was developed by GBATemp user “Kuni59” in the early HENkaku days (August 2016) and it includes many difficulty settings so you can tailor it to your level of Sudoku skill. To change the numbers, you have to use the L/R triggers and I can confirm it works quite well.

Playing Hendoku in easy mode! (I’m not a solitaire master, I know!)

3. Pickr VITA

The game’s a pretty simple game in which you have to touch the tile that has a slightly different colour from the rest. While it sounds easy, don’t be fooled as it’s sometimes pretty tough to distinguish which colour is the different one. The game’s a port of Pickr3DS and was ported to the Vita by “Joel16”. Overall, I’d say it’s a decent way to pass a few minutes.

4. Flyer Deathmatch

This game is somewhat like CSPSP but you control a spaceship rather than a person. You are in a team with other computer controlled spaceships and you must annihilate the other team which is composed of computer controlled spaceships. There is a large range of settings you can change including choosing a different map so this game ought to keep you entertained for a while if you like this genre of games. It was developed by “vladgalay” of Wololo /talk forums.

5. GNU Robbo

GNU Robbo in action!

Like StarKiller 2D, it is a GekiHEN entry but unlike StarKiller 2D, this is a game port rather than an original game. In this game, you control a robot through a maze to finish levels that contain various obstacles. It was ported over by “bomblik” and is a must-have if you like 2D maze-like games from the MS-DOS era! It can also get pretty tricky since you could be forced to restart a level if you waste your bullets or explode a rocket in an improper place.

Conclusion

To install all these games, you can either grab the VPK off VitaDB or install them directly via VHBB. Follow the links below if you wish to get the direct links to them and make sure to report any bugs to the respective developers of each homebrew.

Starkiller 2D: https://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/101

Hendoku: https://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/130

Pickr VITA: https://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/238

Flyer Deathmatch: https://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/248

GNU Robbo: https://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/114

Vita Homebrew Browser (VHBB): http://vitadb.rinnegatamante.it/#/info/205

It is recommended you get VHBB as it makes installing homebrew much faster. Pong for the PSVita wasn’t included because it doesn’t have a computer controlled paddle which makes it quite boring to play alone.

PS Vita Homebrew Release: Project Void 0.1.0

Developer Akabane87 has updated his Homebrew for the PS Vita, project void, now at version 0.1.0.

What is project Void for PS vita?

Project void is a space opera game focused on dogfight, heavily inspired by games such as freelancer. According to the author:

The way you build your spaceship using different modules such as engines, canons and so on, will impact the momentum and the whole physics that will make your ship move and react. Any module will have independent resistance and destroying a module will affect the physics of the ship until you repair it.

Project Void 0.1.0 changelog

This latest release introduces multiple improvements, including a better AI. The full changelog:

2017/09/03 : v0.1.0 (first alpha release)

  • AIs now use both missiles and standard blaster shots.
  • AIs will completely stop if their generator is destroyed, and will use inertia if the engine recalibration is not possible.
  • Disable canons and thrusters when the generator is destroyed.
  • Make the recalibration button only available when a recalibration is possible.
  • Add a volume balance control for each sound data for balancing the sounds.
  • Integrate sounds for blaster shot, missile shot, blaster impact, missile explosion, module explosion, and thrusters.
  • Add a spatialized sound system to the sound player to handle 3d sounds correctly (pan and doppler effect depending the speed).
  • Replace forces by impulses to stop being framerate dependant.
  • Add canon gauges to the HUD and change the HUD disposition.
  • Prevent the engine recalibration to cut all engines when the recalibration is impossible.
  • Optimize a bit the asteroid fragment shader.
  • Add a batch rendering system for asteroids (this shifted the high CPU consumption to the GPU without any gain of FPS…).
  • Fix a weird bug on vita’s flare rendering where the flare could sometime blink randomly (no idea what really happened…).
  • Add a draw order for sprite rendering, to force the rendering order instead of using the center position depth (used for HUD elements always to be in foreground).
  • Add frustrum culling for the particle emitters (per sprite).

You can download Project void from vitadb, or try on mediafire here.

You will need a hacked PS Vita to run Project void.

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK edition released for Adrenaline-6: Setup process easier than ever with VPKs

ePSP game bubbles have been something that a lot of PSVita users have desired on FW 3.60 for quite a while as they were available on some older ePSP hacks. Now, thanks to “leecherman”, you may install ePSP game bubbles of your favourite games in LiveArea without fiddling around with plugins since the custom bubbles are now in VPK format!

A custom ePSP bubble of GoW: Ghost of Sparta!

What’s Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition?

As its name suggests, Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition lets you create an ePSP bubble in LiveArea so you can directly start your PSP games from there. While previous releases made you fiddle around with taiHEN’s config.txt as they were in plugin form, this version makes life easier.

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition supports Adrenaline-6 and has a great UI for creating the bubble. To install a custom bubble, this is what you need to do:

  • Install “‘AdrBubbleBooterInstaller.vpk” bundled in the RAR file below and open it so that you have the required files installed to actually use LiveArea bubbles created with Adrenaline Bubble Booter Creator. Obviously Adrenaline-6 needs to be installed to use this.

    Adrenaline Bubble Booter Creator!

  • Fill in the fields in the Adrenaline Bubble Booter Creator application bundled in the RAR file so that you can create and customise your bubble to your liking. You need to put in information such as the game path (from ms0:) and the images you want to use for the LiveArea bubble. You may leave some image fields empty and the default images will be used instead.
  • That’s it! Install the VPK you created with Adrenaline Bubble Booter Creator on your PSVita and enjoy your new bubble!

Important: Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the created VPKs to install when I put in my images. VitaShell returned error 0x8010113D and according to online questions, it seems to have something to do with the PNG files not being properly processed for LiveArea. I have tried processing the PNG files (ICON0 and PIC0) with pngquant (they are directly from the ISO itself) but they still didn’t work. Fortunately, VPKs still install if you only change the bubble name. Hopefully, this will be rectified in a future release.

Conclusion

To get this utility/hack, follow the link below. If you have any issues, report them to “leecherman” in a civil manner so that we get fully functional ePSP game bubbles on our HENkaku-enabled PSVita/PSTVs soon!

VitaQuakeII 1.0.1 released

$

Vita scene developer Rinnegatamante has released an update for VitaQuakeII.

What is VitaQuakeII?

VitaQuakeII is a port of Quake II for the PS Vita. You will need a hacked PS Vita (e.g. running Henkaku) in order to run this game.

With this new release, the developer fixed a few issues and added a few improvements, specifically:

– Rescaler now works as intended. Before it didn’t really change the in-game resolution.
– Now rescaler won’t cause random crashes anymore.
– Now closing the homebrew from the Exit voice won’t cause a crash anymore.
– Adjusted standard camera sensibility.
– Fixed camera sensibility option in Options menu to make it more flexible.
– Adjusted Options menu renaming some voices and removing others that didn’t do anything on the Vita port.

Rinnegatamante was holding on the release in the hope to add more features, unfortunately he has recently been considering leaving the scene,  and therefore chose to release what he already has, to wrap things up nicely.

The latest version of VitaQuakeII can be downloaded from the Developer’s site here.

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition version 0.2 released – Import images directly from the ISO/CSO/SFO/PBP file of your game!

A few days ago, “leecherman” released his Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK edition which let you add LiveArea bubbles of your PSP games on Firmware 3.60 quite easily. Now, he decided to upgrade his utility to make it even easier to create decent bubbles for your Vita.

What’s Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition?

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition is utility/hack that lets you add Adrenaline-based ePSP bubbles to LiveArea. With the creator utility, you can change the name of the bubble and its various images (background, icon, etc). After you create a custom bubble with the Creator tool, a VPK is outputted and you can simply install that onto your Vita via VitaShell. Sounds simple, right? Yep, it is very simple and with this update, the process has been made even quicker! To run the creator tool, you need to have a computer that can run .NET framework 4.0 applications. Before using any bubbles created by the creator tool, you need to install “AdrBubbleBooterInstaller.vpk” from version 0.1 of the tool which installs the required files for using bubbles created with this tool.

A custom ePSP bubble of GoW: Ghost of Sparta!

What changed/got updated in Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition version 0.2?

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition version 0.2 brings along the following:

  • The ability to grab the title and images of a game from its ISO/CSO/PBP or SFO file. To do this, you need to have the game file you wish to use on your computer. Don’t try it via Windows Explorer’s FTP function as it crashed the Bubble Creator for me!
  • Ability to create bubbles with PSPEMU/PSMOBILE templates.
  • Icon0 styles names got updated.
  • Some more improvements.

The most important part of this update is that now, you don’t need to extract the PIC0 and ICON0 files from the ISO file via an archiving utility so the process of creating visually-appealing bubbles has now been made easier. (That being said, the bubble creator does have some bugs and I can’t create a bubble with custom image files as it just returns “Object reference not set to an instance of an object”). His contact page on his Google Sites page doesn’t seem very convincing so this article

Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK Edition 0.2

is in a way a bug report. Hopefully, he creates a Twitter/GitHub account so that bugs can be easily reported! It’s a real shame that the Creator utility doesn’t work as is :/ IT TURNS OUT THAT IT ONLY DIDN’T WORK ON WINDOWS 7 32-BIT FOR SOME REASON, IT WORKS JUST FINE ON WINDOWS 7 64-BIT!

Conclusion

To get this utility/hack, you can follow the link below to the download links. As for now, I recommend sticking to the fixed-up version 0.2 if you use 64-bit Windows but you should check out the fixed-up version 0.1 if it doesn’t work properly.

Notepad Vita released – Jot down notes quickly on your PSVita!

$

When it comes to built-in apps, Sony only gave a slim suite to the PSVita.  Thanks to VitaHEX, the creators of Pro Camera Vita amongst other homebrew, we now have a simple “Notes”/”Memo” app for our PSVita!

What’s Notepad Vita?

As the title suggests, it’s a note-taking application for the Playstation Vita and PSTV (although I doubt that you’ll be using your PSTV to take notes!). It has various features such as:

  • A clean two-panel interface that’s reminiscent of the “Notes” application on iPads from iOS 3.2-6.1.3. On the left hand side you have a list of your notes (their filenames actually) and on the right, you can read the actual note.

    Notepad Vita in action!

  • The ability to easily export/import notes to another device since they’re in TXT format. Notes are saved in ux0:data/NotesHEX/
  • On-screen directions for easier navigating the homebrew.
  • Scrolling through notes and of course, multi-line notes.

While it’s a great notes app, there are some areas in which I’d like to see improvement.

Firstly, I wish to see a way to rename your notes in the application itself to make it easier to sort your notes; a feature in which the name of the note is the first word of the note would also work. Secondly, a word-wrapping feature would also be appreciated as long sentences aren’t readable in the actual note viewer as they run off-screen.There’s also a bug in which you get sent back to the first note when you edit a note.

Editing a note in Notepad Vita

When you edit a note, you get the normal PSVita text editor as shown in the screenshot which means that you could easily change keyboards.

Conclusion

Notepad Vita does a pretty decent job at being a great notes app to take down something in a hurry so I would recommend you put it on your PSVita but hopefully, the improvements I’ve mentioned above get implemented soon. To get this homebrew, you can download it via VitaDB (so you can directly install it onto your Vita via VitaDB) or you can get the VPK from the link below. If you have any issues, report them to VitaHEX on Patreon or Twitter.

NoNpDrm plugin for the PSVita released – Bypass DRM protection on all PSVita content!

$

0

The day’s finally with us, “TheFlow” has just released his big surprise (that he disclosed a few days ago)! With NoNpDrm, we can all say good-bye to issues with licensing which means that you could easily play your legally-owned games even if your Vita is deactivated (or got deactivated thanks to Sony..) and do much more.

What exactly is NoNpDrm?

In a nutshell, NoNpDrm is there to take out DRM protection on the PSVita which means that all license checks are disabled for PSVita games. It can do the following:

  • Bypass expiration of PlayStation Plus and other timed licenses.
  • Let you run trial versions of games as full versions. (This probably doesn’t apply to all DEMOs as they don’t include all the content of the full game).
  • You can play your own purchased games on deactivated consoles.
  • Game updates can be applied and used directly even if you don’t have an activated console with the game on that account.
  • More features such as the ability to export PSVita content license keys as fake licenses.
  • Undoubtedly, this will be used for piracy since it makes life easier when it comes to dumping games as some games had issues with dumping tools such as Vitamin and MaiDump. This shall not be discussed further in this article or on the /talk forums as Wololo is against piracy; this article is here to inform you about all aspects of the plugin!

While it can do lots, it’s important to keep in mind that it can’t do the following:

  • No, this plugin won’t let you play games that require firmware 3.61 or higher!!
  • PSP and PSX titles that are directly installed via PKGs are not supported BUT you can always use Adrenaline for those which will give you a superior gaming experience. Thanks to Adrenaline Bubble Booter VPK edition, you can even do bubbles for them in a pretty easy manner.
  • It also doesn’t let you run applications without a valid or fake license file.
  • Allow modifications to games so some plugins/mods may not work!

Conclusion

Undoubtedly, this plugin will be used for both legitimate and illegitimate purposes but how you use it is up to you. Make sure you read the README at least twice to grasp exactly how this plugin works! It is very important that you correctly understand how the plugin works before installing it! If you have any issues, report them to “TheFlow” on GitHub or Twitter in a civil and well-thought out manner.

Source: https://twitter.com/theflow0/status/908614883767459840

Donation Tweet (you don’t have to donate to use this plugin but it’s a nice thing to donate a buck or two for TheFlow’s hard work!; Wololo doesn’t benefit in ANY way from this): https://twitter.com/theflow0/status/908626504380280833

As stressed before, no discussion of piracy with this plugin shall be initiated on Wololo (including the /talk forums).

TheFloW is back with another fluid update for the most widely used homebrew in the VITA scene, VitaShell. This update brings along a few new features and a bug fix to improve the quality of the system performance. 🙂

What’s VitaShell?

VitaShell is a multi-purpose file manager that provides a GUI for file management. Being one of the most widely used homebrews in the scene, it allows you to do various things such as transferring files via FTP or USB, open a plethora of media files, and view/edit text among other major things such as mounting hard drives/flash drives as a storage device for PS TV/VITA TV.

VitaShell 0.91 Deus Ex theme by @TheDragoon1010

Change-log:

  • Added ability to export video files.
  • Added support for PSVSD uma0: mounting.
  • Fixed bug where the right analog stick was simulated when the headphone was plugged in.

PS, if you have an internet connection, you can update straight through VitaShell itself. If not, you can download it via the GitHub link below. Also worth mentioning that the PSVSD mounting support is for the microSD adapter for 1st-gen Vita with 3G.
